Are You Eccentric?

IMG_20250216_090745987.webp

These are my shoes. I have two pairs in green also.

OIP.webp

These are my winter boots.

How many points do I get?

People often described me as eccentric but it's about my social mannerisms rather than the way I dress.

I actually hate getting dressed up and if at all possible I prefer to be barefoot. I hate attending social events in restaurants and hotels more so for this reason than because of all the noise. Being stuffed in to a clown suit takes all the enjoyment out of a good meal and a few drinks for me, I'd prefer to get take away and sit on the beach.

Balance and twirl walking canes, poop scoops, ect.
Wear a feed bucket or a box or various other items for a hat
Yodel the word meow
Rhyme my sentences from time to time
Spontaneous science experiments
Read encyclopedias and reference materials for fun
Galloping up and down the hall
Rapid speech
Overly animated expressions and gestures when excited
Random spin on heels or do a small hop and smack hands together mid conversation when an extra spurt of energy hits mid conversation or to accentuate a particular word or remark
Talking to birds, squirrels, lizards and even insects
Making seemingly random associations between things (eg. Did you ever realize that the phone holder thingy looks like an upside-down bulldog face!?"😃)
Make up silly songs
Laugh too much and smile too big
Laugh and grin as an expression of other emotions like fear or embarrassment or to handle pain not just happiness and humor
Pretend my swing is an airplane
Think up random questions
Super curious
Will listen to a favorite song on repeat
Will watch a few seconds or minutes long show skit on repeat rather than actually watching the entire show
Wearing a horsey toboggan every winter
Sticking flowers in my ball cap
Observing insects and testing their responses to various stimuli and noticing seeming personality variations within members of a common species
Handfeeding a leaf to a caterpillar

I'm sure I'm missing several things that would belong on this list.

Everyone I have ever met describes me as "eccentric", "enigmatic", "special [needs]", "weird", "unique", "odd duck", "marches to the beat of his own drum"...people don't tend to explain why.

It would possibly be easier to list the ways I might be normal...except I can't think of any off-hand (lol)

But let's see...eccentricities...

I carry fidget/stim toys everywhere and openly play with them, have an assortment of chewable silicone and chewelry

I will not attend healthcare appts
without a stuffed bear I actually hold onto

My favorite ever shoes (alas, have fallen apart beyond repair now) were both old chuck taylors-style high top sneakers: 1 pair was light blue and covered with yellow submarines as depicted for The Beatles song; 1 pair was mostly darker shades of blue but multi-colored and covered in creatures and landscape from Dr Seuss's "If I ran the zoo" (in adulthood - mens shoes)

I own dinosaur print swear pants...half my
clothes would probably be brightly colored and/or dinosaur print if such things were typically available in adult mens sizes where i live and that i could afford or if i could afford to make my own clothes.

I am never seen in public without at least 1 (usually all) of the following: hat/cap; hood pulled up even in summer; ear defenders

I wear hoodies all year long even in sweltering heat

I can been seen ferrying caterpillars to safety on bike paths in spring, and stopping at random to take photos of bugs, birds, flowers, leaves, intriguing or witty graffiti

i sing audibly to myself while listening to music and don't notice, and then don't care when i realize or am made aware people can hear me (unless i am bothering them - like in a quiet space)

i am usually stimming/fidgeting or rocking

i don't ignore homeless people, i talk to them (well, more just listen) if they talk to me - and i don't walk past people passed out in weird positions surrounded by drug paraphernalia but check to make sure they are still alive and ok and carry naloxone (it used to be free at pharmacies for anyone and they would train you how to use it to save another person who had overdosed on something like fentanyl....i dont think it is anymore because of political things...btw these should not be seen as eccentric or unusual imo but to many people they are)

i don't ignore nor fear fellow eccentrics who want to interact with me although (again) i listen more than speak

A few things people call eccentric about me: Probably number one is being a nudist. Somehow that doesn't feel right with the majority.

I like insects and keep certain types for pets in terrariums. @FayetheADHDsquirrel Love the cicada nymph. They are such an interesting find, and I like to hear the adults singing in the pines outback.

I sing along with songs on the radio in the car. Once I had just parked the car and was really into the song I was singing with. Rocking the car. An elderly man walked in front of the car on the sidewalk, stopped and gave me a thumbs up and a big smile. Guess for a 68- year- old to be doing such was eccentric to him.

The way I shop for clothes is by feel. I go around pinching the fabric between my thumb and forefinger of anything I find interesting. The feel of the fabric is much more important than the appearance.
And I like casual, comfortable clothes. In Florida a tee-shirt and Bermuda shorts with sandals are acceptable anywhere.

I don't use a Smartphone. Until the day it is forced on me, nope.
And when I go into a fast -food place like McDonalds, Taco Bell, etc. I refuse to use the Kiosk for ordering and get told I have to. That is against corporate rule. Patrons are supposed to be able to order at the counter if they so choose.

I don't like going anywhere without my funky colored knee high socks. I get some strange looks in the summer when I'm in shorts but I like em. Comment wise I've only gotten compliments. The photo below is not of me, just a screen grab from the outfit I get my socks from. I oddly have next to no photos of myself, I go places but I'm not a selfie taker.

Quite a bit of stuff.

First, the one that everyone always notices before anything else:

chain.webp

That's my keychain. It is very long. It is always with me. When I'm out of the house and not currently in the car it'll be wrapped around my left arm. It makes a lot of noise when I move around. I'm quite attached to it, and I really dont like when anyone else picks it up or something.

Oddly, while there are 3 keys on there, only one of them (the car key) actually does anything. The key attached to the yellow bit was actually for a neighbor's house, in the area we lived in many years ago. Spent a lot of time over there. I would often wander over there and into the back yard to play with their dog, everyone loved that dog. Though, I suppose he's probably been gone a long time now. Which is a thought I really didnt need to have right now, moving on...

Speaking of dogs, while I normally mask a lot, the one time the mask comes off is if I'm interacting with dogs or cats. I'll get down on the floor and make whatever weird movements or high pitched sounds to get a happy reaction out of them. It's kinda odd when I think about it... in normal situations I tend to mask and hold back a lot, rather than seem too strange, mostly because of so many bad experiences back during my school days. I rarely talk while in full masked mode. But if there's a dog in the room, it wont matter who is nearby, I'll do that stuff anyway.

Also, I tend to have what I often describe as a sort of ragged appearance overall. Very noticable with my clothes and hair. I've shown character drawings that I've made before, the reason why I always draw the hair with strands just going all over the place is because that's generally how mine looks IRL. I've never been able to figure out how everyone else keeps theirs so neat. Downside, it's always in my face at the most annoying moments.

I dont watch movies (they're too long)

Dont like restaurants. I've got like, 3 minutes of patience when it comes to food preparation. I absolutely will just eat blank bread slices rather than have to wait longer than that. Also I dont understand why everyone sees "meal time" as "social time". That's always baffled me. Like, I'm trying to eat my stupid crackers or whatever, get away from me.

I dont listen to "normal" music. Generally if its got lyrics in it I dont like it. All the music I have is taken from video games I like.

I dont do texting, like, at all. Or social media. Oh I have a phone, a very advanced phone, but it isnt used for those things. It's treated more like a somewhat bizarre computer I can carry everywhere. Some of the special effects I use to create certain bits of art I make are actually done with specific apps that are only found on that phone. These gizmos have like 5 bazillion different features and things they can do, I make a point of learning about and using them. It's just that I dont use them for the extremely specific 2 or 3 things that most people use theirs for.

Uh, board games, I am into board games, but I only play them solo. Which actually isnt uncommon among people into that hobby. But anyone who isnt familiar with that hobby tends to wonder why in the world I would do that and how it would even work.

As hobbies go, there's also this:

cubes.webp

I dont remember how I got into puzzle cubes or whatever you want to call some of these tangled things, but I've been into these for awhile now. I used to think that the traditional Rubik's Cube was like this impossible thing, how could anyone solve it. Now the traditional one is pretty much effortless (though I still have a whole bunch of traditional ones). I dont do the whole "speed solve" method. I cant remember 500 freaking algorithms. I only have 3 simple ones. Benefit: those 3 can be used on any puzzle and encourage learning how the puzzle works instead of memorizing sequences. Downside: it takes me like 20x longer to do a solve than it does for many others who are into these. Did ya know there are people who can solve the original cube in like 5 seconds? Yeah it takes me like 15 minutes. Still effortless, just slow to execute. I'm not in it for the speed element anyway.

And yeah, there's some darned loopy puzzles out there. Something I quickly learned is that the number of pieces doesnt always determine how hard one is. Nor does the shape of it. That silver mess on the far left is pretty easy. The also tangled thing that is 2nd from the right, that one just... yeah I dont know how to approach that one yet. The one just to the left of that one also looks very confusing but it's not that hard really.

There's one particular puzzle, a bigger and more weird looking version of that gear thing in the middle, which looks very confusing and gets even more confusing when you start turning it, but it's actually extremely easy and if you just keep randomly turning it, it will eventually solve itself. It will look and feel very strange the whole way though.

And lastly, I dont drink alcohol, like, ever. Apparently that's very weird to some people. And yes I know there's a bunch of stuff in the background of that photo there, but that aint for me. For me the bar is just where I put things on, and sometimes I use the sink for stuff.

The way I shop for clothes is by feel. I go around pinching the fabric between my thumb and forefinger of anything I find interesting. The feel of the fabric is much more important than the appearance.

I'm like that as well in that the feel of clothes is much more important than appearance is and also liking casual comfortable clothes. I'm also eccentric in that I essentially have a uniform of sorts that I wear 7 days a week. I found pants and plain solid color polo shirts that I really like the feel of so I just got several pairs of each. Pants are all the same color. The upside side besides always having something genuinely comfortable on is that I don't have to think at all anymore about what to wear, anywhere. Summer time for outside of work I also found comfortable shorts and just bought several pairs of those. Winter time I add a plain zip up hoodie with the perfect fleecy liner, again several in different colors but always the same make/brand. I have been doing that for several years now and to this point nobody at work or in my social life I think has even noticed. All of it from the same store so when something needs to be replaced I can get the exact same thing again. Only thing that changes is the color choices with the tops available.

Wow! Nice! :)

I guess I might be the "boring old man" of the group. I do admit that I am definitely "different" from my neurotypical peers. I am a quick adopter to solar-battery energy, electric cars, personal investments. I am self-taught on a wide variety of skills residential and automotive electrical systems, engine building, auto mechanics, welding, construction techniques, and competitive driving. Then, my deep dives into my special interests like my plant collection, aquariums... but also my profession... all the deep anatomy, physiology, physics, waveform graphics analysis, etc. I have an insatiable hunger for knowledge... constantly learning something new... articles and videos on a wide variety of topics... non-stop, all day. Drives my wife nuts sometimes. Then there is my mind... constantly with the inner monologue having no less than 2-3 conversations going on... like a crowded room of people and I am bouncing between them having all these conversations. It's an absolute storm of activity. My wife will sometimes ask, "What are you thinking?" and when I tell her she just shakes her head and laughs... because it is all this random crap that rarely has anything to do with her or our life.

I don't know and I do not care. I enjoy my deep dives into natural history, geology, and paleontology. These have taken me to some pretty interesting places where I've collected everything from geodes to dinosaur teeth, so I guess that I'm pretty much conventional. I still enjoy picking up different skills and yesterday slabbed some agatized dinosaur poop that I will make something out of.
