Unless the butter were formed into a Calabi-Yau manifold, wouldn't they just go to the other side?
 
If they were going into a bright light it would have to be either that or an alien abduction, wouldn't it?
 
Wouldn't whatever constitutes "more interesting scenery" be different for everyone, including those who prefer to study the track that has been beaten?
 
Should one choose to study it, is there any historical record that tells us who beat the first track, and what offense was committed by the track to warrant such treatment?
 
What if the non-sentient entity were a sword, and they were beating it into a plowshare?
