I was walking the perimeter checking the fence at the horse pasture today when I heard a sudden somewhat loud noise. I thought it was some kind of bird, but upon looking towards the sound, I saw a white tailed deer running away. I have seen deer at the pasture before but had never heard one make that sound before.

I love it when nature throws us a surprise like that. Reminds me of a chirping bluejay, or so I thought.

Turned out to be a squirrel! Ditto...never heard such a squawk from a mammal before.

exactly! i saw some hummingbirds on my way to school and even at home, it's incredible

One of our local native pigeons takes people by surprise if they've never seen them before. Their wings make squeaky noises when they fly. You'll hear the sound just 10 seconds in to this video:

We have a lot of squirrels here so I am pretty sure I know what sound you are talking about. They use that when they think a predator is nearby.

The deer on my property make a raspy hissing sound if they are anxious about me. Around here they rarely wander near houses since they are hunted and my garden has never been disturbed by them.
Added My freezer has venison from last fall. The deer heads went to the state which are monitoring Wasting Disease . . . and Prions give me the willies.

Good point. They like to hang out in and around the rocks adjacent to raw desert here, but they are also quite close to the grassy area where tenants take their dogs to relieve themselves. And on occasion I've seen dogs take out after them. We used to have a great number of rabbits in the same area, but a blight that occurred a few years ago changed all that.

In a hard winter, deer come into town to browse on the landscaping. (The Mule deer stay on the West side, and the Whitetail get the East.) I'd been feeding them, so when I saw a deer on the steet with a car approaching, I knew that it would make a run for my back yard. I just stepped around the corner of the house, and a second later it came flying by, close enough to touch.

Start salting one small area, and they will be around more. You can even just toss out those salt wheels people buy for hamster cages. I've heard you can remove the cord and base from a broken salt rock lamp and toss it in the yard, even.

I wish I could but I don't own the land where the horses are. If I ever have land of my own, I want it to be a safe place for such creatures and to be able to photograph them and such. I don't want to endanger the deer by helping lure them into an area where they will likely be killed. Their lives are more important than some photos.

If deer don't have a predator, they quickly exceed the carrying capacity of their land, and all live short, miserable lives. Around here, they cause about half the car wrecks.
