Hi all,

I have in the last 6 months (at 40) self-diagnosed myself as Aspie, after identifying a little too much with the character depicted in the TV series "The Good Doctor". I started googling "Autism without language difficulties", and came across Aspergers. It was like years of puzzle pieces started to fit together..

I was talking with a counsellor at the time due to relationship issues so I (for the first time during a session) removed the mask I normally use when dealing with everyone and told her how I "don't feel the same way as other people". She immediately suggested ASD. I don't think that qualifies as an official diagnosis since ASD isn't exactly her specialty, but I'm not sure I think it's beneficial for me to have anything more official than that. Is it? Has officialness made a difference to anyone?

Anyways, it's been 6 months of re-evaluating countless situations from my past through a new lens. New understanding with my wife that has effectively resolved the aforementioned relationship issues. And mostly, a million questions about where the line is between NT and AS. Basically, trying to find the answer to "which parts of me are AS related and which aren't".

Articles I've been reading are getting irritating due to the majority framing of AS as a negative, a deficit, or some kind of disability". So, I thought I'd try a forum with people in the same boat.. And here I am..

Hi and welcome. It's good to hear that a non specialist counsellor recognised that you might have high autistic traits or Aspergers, I did a lot of therapy without having it suggested, and finally found out enough about it all to diagnose myself, which has been very useful, as it explained the areas that therapy had never made any impact on. I hope you enjoy it here, there's plenty to read up on.
