Aging Autistic Programmer

Ugh..... yeah.

I am genuinely very sure at this point that I cannot handle working in an industry where best practices and work methodologies and tools and priorities change this quickly. You know, not over years, but months, weeks even.

Also, I absolutely loathe daily standup. It's almost the worst part of the day. It's a little bit better after fighting for several months to have it in a meeting room instead of in the middle of the floor, but I know no one else on the team likes that themselves, they are just tired of seeing me not be able to speak when I'm expected to.

I need to find a way out, but I don't know how to go about it yet.

Welcome, you are not alone.

Thanks :) Our standups are in an open space. I tend to be fairly vocal about things though lol.

What do you find difficult about standup?

For me it is the inability to finish a sentence because people cut me off.

Haha.... being vocal about things is like impossible for me. Always has been, and people always take advantage of it.

I think the open space aspect is the most difficult. It also feels like a lot of pressure because every time I have to mention that I am "still working on the same thing as yesterday" whereas everyone else has moved onto something else, it feels super awful. And of course standup is free forum to get challenged on everything from "why are you still working on this" to "please give more details about what working on this means" and "this detail you care about sounds like not a priority, please stop working on it"..... in front of everyone.

@hiraeth you should be able to ask for help in a standup. That's part of what the standup is for. If standup is being used to point fingers at and weed out bad developers then IMHO it's being mis-used and abused.

I know it sucks to have to go through these each day but they're kinda a good opportunity to train yourself in some social interaction.
