Does the sad puppy/upset face thing actually
help you toward flowing speech?

When I stammer, I realize I can stop applying
pressure on myself to try to speak as rapidly as I
think. Pause. Relax diaphragm.

Then continue.
 
My parents would shame me for stuttering, even snarl at me for doing it. I also had a young lady mock my voice to my face when she asked me a question and I stuttered. They need to realize that stuttering is involuntary and requires treatment.

Your parents are mean and clueless about stuttering, and the young woman was not a "lady". She was mean and cruel.

Please see if the library where you work has a movie called "The King's Speech". I think you would appreciate it. It is the historically true story of King George VI who, among other things, led England through WWII. He was a stammerer. The story is about how a man, an Australian and a mere commoner, helped him with the stutter and became a lifelong friend. It's a very good movie and you might like it. It taught me a lot of things about why people start to stutter in the first place and techniques that helped the King with it.

You’d think with my parents being doctors, they would be more intellectual and understanding. However, they are actually anti-intellectual or they dismiss anything that doesn’t align with their socio-political views.

I actually once checked out that movie from the library some years ago. It’s possible the library still has it. When I watched it, I unfortunately dozed off on the couch. If I am to see it again, I will need to load up on caffeine.

I don’t really think about it when it happens. I am usually just upset with myself.
 
Thinking can help.

Provided the thinking is helpful.

Meaning, don't focus on negative ideas,
fantasies of how you imagine you're being perceived/judged.

Helpful thinking is when you are kind to yourself.
This doesn't mean lying or pretending.

Helpful thinking is being rational toward oneself.
 
I stammer often when I get overly anxious. I have trained myself to laugh it off, stop, and say something like - "Okay let's try that again!" It takes the edge off and lightens the moment. Usually the other person laughs as well because everyone has had something like that happen to them. It makes you human and relatable.

Instead of believing in myself, I was always told to be believe in either Jesus or God.
