    special interests

If it makes you happy and you enjoy it then that's all that matters. After 53 years I finally figured out that I'm not going to be like other people. I quit trying to be who society says I should be and just be happy being who God created me to be. To be honest,, I still like watching Peppa...

    Can autistic people be extroverts?

I'm not all that great at socializing but I preach in churches as a layspeaker. It took years to develop the skills needed and now I am more relaxed preaching than making small talk. It's the small talk before and after the service that's difficult.

Depression: realising that i’m not as attractive or as gifted as I thought I was

Being a hottie is not all it's cracked up to be. I have spent my life fighting girls off who just want a piece of me. I feel like just a piece of meat sometimes. Actually I'm just average too,,, maybe even below average, but after 50 years I've learned to like me just the way I am.

How many of you have older parents?

My parents were around 20 when I was born. I was 6 weeks early so it could have contributed to my problem, but I'm pretty sure my mom was an aspie and her mom too.

What was your challenges growing up with Autism or Asperger?

School was a nightmare. Mostly the learning part. I can't listen to what a teacher is saying and understand a word she is saying. They may as well be speaking a foreign language. I need pictures. I was a straight D student but could beat just about all the other kids in the spelling bee every...

Do your parents understand and accept your autism?

When I explained to my mom what aspergers is we pretty much came to the conclusion that both her and her mom were on the spectrum. My dad is accepting I guess. My stepmom is the psychologist type and fully understood, almost like she already knew. Me and my dad are not real close so we don't...

Weird memory? General ASD feature or is it just me?

My memory is pretty similar, except remembering what I read. I also can't remember names or celebrities. Of course my attention span watching movies is nonexistant. There may be one movie I have watched all the way through in 50 years. I remember weird situations too that normal people probably...

(New video) why autistic people are not sick

Great video! Thank You for doing this!

    Finally comfortable with my autism.

That's so awesome that you have reached this point. So many on the spectrum never do. It took me 45 years to reach that point and now at age 50 I love who God made me to be. Every person on this forum has so many positive attributes. If they can just realize what those are and not focus on...

How long did your Aspergers diagnosis take?

I was never diagnosed even though I had seen professionals in my teens. I accidentally figured out why I was different when a friend posted a Temple Grandin video on Facebook. When she described her childhood I had no doubt that I was an Aspie. I had never heard of it before. I was 45 when I...

    More sensitive to noise

Temple Grandin explained in one of her videos that the Aspie brain perceives sounds as being louder than they really are. I hate loud, sudden sounds like a balloon popping or fireworks or guns. I also can't stand to hear someone eating and especially talking while they are eating.

Favourite TV Show or Shows and Film or Films

I like The Andy Griffith Show, American Pickers, NHRA drag racing, Barnwood Builders. I also watch my two favorite preachers, Dr. Charles Stanley and Dr. David Jeremiah. I saw Invasion of the body snatchers when I was about 10 years old. Scared me so bad I had to leave the movie theater.

    You're different, not disabled

I think the whole concept of "embracing our autism" is easier when we get older. I'm 49 now and have learned to accept who I am and have had lots of practice at functioning in the world. But when I was in school it was a different story. Even when I got out of school and tried to enter the...

Wow, just wow, it took just 5 posts!

I have found this board to be a very positive experience. Most on here are always so helpful and encouraging. Being an aspie can be a tough life for many. We should always strive to encourage each other as much as possible. Too bad the other board is not this way. It's the same all over the...

Anyone a Fan of Temple Grandin?

She is the reason I found out I was an aspie. I always knew my brain wasn't normal and one day a friend who is a veterinarian posted a Temple Grandin video on Facebook and when she started describing her childhood I knew without a doubt I was an aspie.
