Scandinavian Thoughts

Can you name me an economy that worked well with a combination of following:

- Extensive individual civil rights
- Extensive welfare to all citizens of a country
- Support for the disadvantaged people in a country

Maybe the Scandinavian economy does work well.

So why can't more countries learn from Scandinavia? Why can't we have more inclusive social policies like the Scandinavians do? And more importantly, why can't we work together and support all our people, regardless of gender, creed or even medical conditions?

Comments

Totally aside from the entire scandinavian notion you put out here

"why can't we work together and support all our people, regardless of gender, creed or even medical conditions?"

Because some people don't want to.

Some people are racist, sexist or full of prejudice and are not willing to change that. Some actually prefer to support the notion of difference amongst people. They think they're perfectly fine living with their believes. And let's not forget, some with any of these ignorances are even succesful. Really succesful.

Also; just look at for instance the US government and what went on there and somewhat caused the drastic cutbacks. Democrats vs. Republicans... I wouldn't go as far as ignorance, but if even two of the main political ideologies can't find middle ground and haven't really for the past X years (for anyone into history; did these both ideologies ever wholefully agree upon things?).

On a political note I'm seeing a similar case here, and we're not even black and white in terms of Democrats vs. Republicans... currently we've got 11 different flavors of ideology that make up our house of representatives (there were over 20 when we had elections, some didn't get enough votes) and they can't really agree upon something... in the past there were less flavors and it already was a problem.

The thought that 'we have to build up this country and sustain it' apparently is only half as important as it is to maintain your own identity... one can wonder what he fights for, cause if you run a country to the ground, there's not a lot left to sustain and improve.

Let's discuss this, part by part.

Well, those people who are ignorant and prejudiced, why don't they see how much wonders we see in a diverse group of people?

At least, in some other countries, minority groups get government funding to preserve their cultures. In some countries, too, there is active affirmative action to pull up the disadvantaged groups to improve their prospects. I really hope we protect all individuals stronger and better.

If they saw the wonders and diversity, they wouldn't be called ignorant and prejudiced anymore, would they? ;)

I wonder what can we do to get rid of the prejudice and ignorance in people.

From what I understand about Scandinavian and European demographics in general, the Scandinavian Dream may end up unraveling. Why? Because birthrates have dropped below the replacement rates. We are starting to run into that problem here in the United States as the "Baby Boom" generation (1946-1964) starts to retire. This is why social security is in trouble.

Where are the workers going to come from to support all these programs? Immigration? From what I understand, the Scandinavian countries are more homogeneous than the United States, so they have not had to deal with diversity issues. As King Oni puts it, not everyone wants to get along. Not everyone values the same things. What happens if the immigrants moving IN to Scandinavia don't want to support the current system and there are more of them than the native Scandiavians? I understand that this is a problem in other European countries especially those that have large Muslim populations that don't want to assimilate. I don't consider myself prejudiced, but I have no desire whatsoever to live under Sharia Law.

What you are talking about can only work if all parties agree to share the sandbox equally. When you have one party that insists on dominating the sandbox then things can get ugly. When you have two equally determined parties that want to have the sandbox to themselves then the rest of us get trampled. Unfortunately there are elements in Christianity and Islam who do not want to share the sandbox and neither one will back down.

At the very least, every country in the world that is somewhat developed have low birth rates that drop below total fertility levels. Only the United States, however, may be able to deal with this issue - because they have overwhelming immigration or something that other countries don't. But they're dealing with Social Security issues too.

Hopefully, we will all find a way to share the sandbox equally, and this means some form of screening of immigrants whatsoever.
