Recently, I spoke to a family friend, who is a Badger and Cardinal fan (he graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison and Stanford Medical School).

We talked about some Big Ten football - how Michigan State and Wisconsin are cruising in their respective divisions (Legends and Leaders, respectively) - before we touched on the touchy subject of JoePa's resignation.

What a pity, what a long and illustrious career and what a shock it was, when JoePa had to resign because some Jerry Sandusky or whosoever forced sex on children.

Why, after winning the most victories in NCAA Division I, has JoePa got to leave?

He should have left with a fighting chance for the Rose Bowl. Other than Alabama, Penn State are on course for a division title and then the Championship and then, Rose Bowl or whatsoever.

Then there is this sermon held after the final home game for Penn State this season, that briefly skirted on Matthew 6:13

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen

A pastor said, as reported by the press, that this shows that people should not hold power for long, for they will always abuse power helplessly.

Now we should understand our limitations: people, like teams, cannot win forever. They cannot always get the things they want - but they can always be their own best selves for the good of themselves, and then their bigger families, societies, etc.

Let's win together, forever.

The way I understand it, he apparently had knowledge that the abuse was going on but did nothing to stop it, and that is what caused his downfall. I may be wrong, as I haven't been following this too closely.

I'm just curious--just about every time the same kind of scandal in the Catholic church is brought up, it's priestly celibacy that is to blame. As far as I know, none of the accused at Penn State had taken vows of celibacy. So what's the excuse here?

It is tragic, and all the more so, because the people who knew about it and were in a position to do something about it, chose not to. Now the sh*t has hit the fan, and a good school's reputation tarnished. For what? Was it worth it?

It is indeed sickening for a great school to be tarnished - it is tragic.

But excesses of power to win Big Ten and college football at almost all costs, or to keep a trusted person despite his acts, is something which most mortals will do in JoePa's position - on hindsight, pursuit of glory at all costs, without consideration for future consequences, would have happened anyway, even though it does not worth all the negative attention on Penn State later on.
