The bane of autism communities - my opinions

I am confident that in my home country, LFAs will be taken care by the mental hospital, like it or not, and not-too-high-functioning autistics will be taken care by the voluntary welfare organization. This is the Singapore reality. We have no state welfare, so we have no real help totally.

However, if there is nothing to make the high-functioning autistic people be their best, any forums, blogs, etc will be useless - because they just act as what society intended for us - some sort of gambling dens or poor men social clubs, where we do nothing but to whine and groan at life's unfairness.

I am sure Aspies Central will buck the trend of turning Aspies into a pile of waste. We can be a friendly starting point for aspiring high-achievers in our common community. We have different interests and thinking. But we have similar commitment, focus and gift to pull through ideas together.

Whenever I feel discouraged, I think of the American Civil Rights movement and how hard people of color have fought to be recognized as equals. I find African-American history very inspiring because here was a people who refused to be what white society wanted them to be. But they were able to pull together and change society. It took a long time and there is still a long way to go, but things are much different now. I'm sure we can do the same for our community.

Yes, spinning compass. I think eventually, 'we shall overcome'.

In Singapore, our obstacles are way, way greater, because Singapore is a culturally diverse society, and there is practically nothing to gel us all, other than that we all live in this small place called Singapore.

But I am sure, worldwide, in general, ASDs can change society for the better.
