Monday, my father turned 90. Since my parent live with us, guests were here on Fri, Sun & Mon. Monday evening, he was his regular self; extremely hard of hearing & old. Tuesday morning, after my husband left, I went downstairs to bring him the paper. His door was closed, but there were no weird sounds or anything out of the ordinary. About 30 mins later, my mother went down. He still hadn't emerged, but the door was ajar. My mother called me, in a state of alarm.
My father was on his back on the floor, wearing his pyjama bottoms. He was foaming at the mouth & his eyes were rolled up & back. His left side was paralyzed but his right side was flopping about & 'dancing'. He was unconscious & his breathing was coming in gasps. I called 911 & they brought him to the hospital. Scans were run & it turned out that the 'slow-growing' cancer in his lung, diagnosed last summer, wasn't so slow after all. In his head they found a tumour the size of a tennis ball. There is nothing they can do for him but to keep him comfortable.
He is in the ICU & he was comatose but now he is sort of in & out. They will keep him there & when it worsens, they will move him to palliative care. Since I speak French (& I'm not cognitively impaired) I am the contact person. This means having to make multiple phone calls 7 driving my mother there to visit daily.
Today, I had a morning errand to run before going for the visit (YES: 2 trips out on the same day!!!) My route took me over an overpass with a sidewalk on each side. On my left, I saw a guy in an electric wheelchair. Suddenly, it tipped over with him in it & his head hit the pavement. I stopped (hoping not to get hit from behind). A few pedestrians stopped too. I called 911 to get an ambulance. The guy was having spasms & he was semi-conscious. People were about to MOVE the guy despite a possible spinal cord injury. While waiting for the ambulance, a stupid cop came. He ignored the 911 dispatcher's advice to NOT move the guy & he moved him to a flat on his back position (!!!). Others were talking to the cop to but he ignored them & kept moving the already handicapped guy who was now injured (!!!)
I continued on my way & then we went for the visit. I could've slapped the stupidity off of that cop. He might have greatly exacerbated that guy's injuries.
Tomorrow morning, my mother has her own appointment for her Thrombosis at that same hospital where my dad, so we will go up after she gets seen.
Well...this is what has been going on in Soupland. Not good. I am a stimmy super-clumsy mess. Fortunately, my driving skills remain unaffected. I have told my mother NOT to talk incessantly while I am trying to drive, though.
