Why do some people do this? It really confuses me! In a public place like a bar, why do some people try for acknowledgement from someone else already sitting down? Complete strangers.
 
I don’t really know if this answer is relevant or not but... I think it’s because, in bars, most of them are drunk. What prevents someone from listening to their instincts (or gut) is what might be called “cerebral inhibition.” It’s the same thing as “thinking.” Alcohol affects that, so people behave instinctively, and, since we are social by nature, people in bars approach each other in bars not thinking (or not caring) about the possibility that some people wouldn’t like to be approached. That’s my explanation to this “phenomenon.”

(Sorry if this is too technical, but that’s all I have.)

Do you mean as in they try to start a conversation? Or that they are just doing things to try to make sure they get attention from strangers around them in the bar?
 
What do you mean by "acknowledgement"? Attention? Conversation? Trying to get a date, or find a sexual partner? The motivation will vary widely from person to person.

sitting down by you and starting a chat?

I think it is the same reason people like to go to bars to drink in the first place.
They want to sit around and talk while they drink.
Something I never understood, but, it seems to be quite popular.
That's why bartenders are like the resident shrink there. Everyone wants to tell their woes to them.
And, yes, some people go there to find a date or one nighter.

I got a text two mornings ago that said: "We met last night at Bar Louie's. Give me a call for a
meet up sometime. Alex."
So someone must have given Alex my number or made up a number not really wanting a meet up
and it turned out to be mine.

I don’t look for acknowledgment from strangers in bars, but sometimes I like to strike up a conversation with someone I don’t know, just for fun.
 
Nebulous socialization.

Comes naturally to most Neurotypicals. For the Neurodiverse, it takes a bit more effort- and incentive to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger.

Doing such a thing simply boils down to something I occasionally "practice". Just so I can tell myself that it can be done, even and when it's something I don't particularly like doing to begin with.

I really want to use that line.
Maybe I'll sit next to someone at a bus stop :)

Watch them get up and walk away as quick as they csn.

In a small way,if we all did this, the world would get a lot fitter.

I mean, here it's perfectly fine for me to make such a comment. :)

But out there? You're likely to be scrutinized with a nasty look and be told that without the pointed ears, you don't look at all like Mr. Spock. :rolleyes:

And if there is a multi-legged creature crawling on their shoulder, just let it go. ;)

I'm afraid I'd be bursting your bubble to say that I only do such a thing for practice. Not really for any sense of gratification. Socialization more often than not remains arduous to me, seldom gratifying. Autistic and introverted.

There was once a time in my life when I really avoided people altogether. A bad trend given how impractical it is.

Spontaneous demonstration of positive feelings.

Just being happy.

The people clapping know that the players can't hear them clapping.
Doesn't matter.
They are just expressing their feelings.

For the same reason why I tell slasher movies victims not to enter the dark attic where the chainsaw wielding maniac is waiting for them when I watch those movies at my house. They never tend to listen to me because they are stupid, but I have to say something to them anyway.

This is part of the reason why horror movies are more fun to watch at home than at a cinema.
 
I'm not much of a sports fan, but I do like to watch the Triple Crown and certain
tennis players.

I'll do the same thing. Cheering the horses on or whomever I like in tennis matches.
Also, I am more apt to do so when I am watching it live, which I prefer, because it
seems there is just more energy in real time than recorded.

Sometimes employed as a way of expressing partisanship and contempt yet maintaining a disingenuous sense of decorum.

Assuming it could be like the scene out of the movie "Animal House" when the Deltas objected to a sham hearing to shut them down. I'd post the video, but the mods would probably frown on it. ;)

It's annoying when some people do it generally too, for example fake coughing in a library can put you off, you could be sending an important email to, or be studying!
