What's a 3 month itch?

I overheard this lady talking saying that her and her girlfriend (as in lover) are having a 3 month itch in their relationship. What does this mean? If I think literally I think something is itchy but that doesn't make sense in this context. Also, is this specifically an LGBT term or is it also used to talk about heterosexual relationships?
 
I think it refers to the "honeymoon period" of the relationship being over, where things are super exciting and hot... after 3 months typically life sets in and you have to build the relationship on more real terms, rather than just getting to know each other and experiencing new stuff together. At least, I think?

I've heard of the 7 year itch, which is where one married partner becomes bored and is most likely to have an affair. I had never heard of the 3 month itch - but I imagine it's similar.
 
Three month, three year....even seven year itches.

I just refer it all to B.B. King, who sums it all quite well in a blues song some 49 years ago. ;)

 
I think its something you can catch from another person. Particularly if they traveled out of the country.
