My favorite actress right now might be Lillian Gish. I haven't paid much attention to her D.W. Griffith-era work like Broken Blossoms. I thought she was excellent in Night of the Hunter, not because she played an old woman, but that she played an old woman who could have been an ancient goddess of all that is maternal and protective and proof against attacks. She is a Willa Cather character, a Penelope who doesn't actually need Odysseus, a Demeter who would fight Hades with one withered hand behind her back.
