What Autism Feels Like For Me

Nervous Rex

High-functioning autistic

I made this (crappily assembled art) as a way to explain how it feels like my brain works, as compared to those around me. It's not science - there's nothing scientific about this - it's just an analogy that I find convenient.

I like this description. It rather accurately matches my own thoughts on this sort of thing, and I've very often had difficulty in explaining it to others.

This is an interesting take. I personally always thought my subconscious mind has crept into my conscious mind. I've read that the subconscious mind thinks in terms of images, not words. Many of us seem to think in terms of images. To me, those with ASD operate partially in their subconscious mind which leads to less capacity for social functions.

Yes, the subconscious, or intuition, pattern recognition and sensing are in the right hemisphere and logic and reasoning in the left, and in autistic people, these two functions aren't as well integrated. For social communication you need good left and right hemisphere integration.
