Ways Humans Can Help Other Animals

So, I went to toss some dryer lint into the large trash can, but the liner was all the way at the bottom and lying on top of the liner, sleeping, was a possum. I was afraid he couldn't get out and was dead, but he woke up when I jiggled the can.

So I took him outside and tipped the can over so it was lying on its side figuring he would leave when I backed off.

So a couple hours later I go to bring the trash can back in and he is still in there curled up in the bin liner, looking very comfortable. So now I am thinking he was not trapped, but just found a comfy place to spend the day.

So, presumably he will go out tonight after dark and I can get my trash can back.

I hope I'm properly cleaning my hummingbird feeders. I have 4 of them and keep 2 filled with fresh sugar water all the time while the other 2 are soaking in white vinegar. I use a dedicated bottle brush to thoroughly clean them inside, rinse with cold water, and use only glass feeders (although the red bottoms are plastic) because the plastic ones seem to rot a lot faster. I always hang them in full shade.

Seeing fewer fireflies this year? Here's why, and how you can help.
  • Turn off your porch lights. Fireflies are incredibly sensitive to artificial light, and it can confuse them.
  • Ditch the manicured lawn and embrace native plants. In addition to being easier to care for, they suit the local environment and conserve water.
  • Leave some leaves behind when you rake in the fall. They’re a great place for fireflies to find food, stay cool, and lay eggs.
  • Plant shrubs, tufting grasses, and other, large plants. These can shelter fireflies during rainstorms and other severe weather.
  • If you spot fireflies, jot down when and where you saw them and add your observations to citizen science databases like iNaturalist, Firefly Watch, or Firefly Atlas to help scientists collect data.

Science reveals dogs' favorite type of TV

‘Animals are more interesting than people and inanimate objects’

The new results are also closely aligned with a 2024 survey study conducted by Mowat and a separate group of dog researchers at the University of Wisconsin. That research included more than 1,000 responses and also specific video clips for owners to show their pets. It similarly reported that other animals (and specifically dogs) were the most attention-grabbing canine TV content. They also found slight trends related to breed and age. Sporting and herding-type dogs were overrepresented among the TV watchers and older dogs seemed less likely to frequently engage with television.
