U.S. $2 notes

Here in the U.S.A., if you walk into a typical bank to withdraw your cash, and ask the teller for your money in $2 notes, the teller will typically reply that they have perhaps a dozen of these in the branch. I prevailed on a local bank to order these from the Federal Reserve Bank.

They explain to customers who want them that "Customers don't want them."

When they see me walking into the property tax office, they know they are in for a stack of these. It seems like I am the only one using $2 notes, often motivating cashiers to ask their managers about these.

"We don't like them because we have no spot in the cash till for them." explains the owner who set up the cash till that way.

I give back the extra change when they think the half dollar coin is a dollar, which is often, given the ignorance of so many people. The Canadian half dollar is also rare in circulation in Canada.

Anybody else doing this?

Congratulations, you have defeated superstition in yourself; a large reason that two-dollar bills are unpopular is that people think they are unlucky.

This changed in Canada during the decade in which the two-dollar bill was in circulation without the one-dollar bill. It might happen if the USA stops printing the dollar bill as Canada did.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing. I cherish my Canadian 50 cent piece. A two-dollar bill? I have one or two...but just for sh*ts and giggles.

Interesting. My mother had one interesting experience at the ATM a few years ago. She got two $20 bills from the 60's. The rest of the notes was modern notes. This is a very rare thing to happen at the ATM.

I have a few of the old bills too. My mom used to work in a bank and we always had an interest in unusual currency. My dad and I use $2 bills and Sacajawea dollars for tips. People love them.

I had a friend mailed me during a period you country briefly had a dollar coin and decided to revert back to the dollar bill.

My dad gave me a 1923 one million German mark Reichsbank note before he died. I gave it to my wife one year to give to her Secret Santa at work.

I asked for $20 dollars in only $2 dollar bills. They asked me what i wanted them for. I told them to frame them.

Had a friend who used to withdraw all his pay in 20¢ pieces as soon as he was paid. He said it was good for saving because to buy anything he had to carry a ton of cash in his pockets which was too hard. And it was good for security as his coffee tins of coins weighted too much to steal too many. I was more worried about the floor collapsing :-)

I love $2 bills. I use them, I get $50 stacks at the bank. I save special serial numbers and search for the coveted star notes. Seen these yet? Any us currency that gets damaged in minting process, gets re printed with a star next to the serial number.
I have some silver certificate $2 and modern.
It's hilarious to see people bug out about them.

I never heard that before. About them being unlucky. I know some folks don't like them. I like currency and coins.

Why are American $2 bills considered bad luck?

Nobody's entirely certain, but possible explanations are prostitution, vote-buying, and gambling.

Before the loonie came to Canada, there was some regional variation in the use of the two-dollar bill. It was used a lot in Ontario but was essentially non-existent west of there.

Ah, interesting, thanks Flinty :)

I like to collect money, so I have a $2 bill or two stashed away, along with as many coins of my currency I can find. When I was a cashier, I'd keep an eye out for little odds and ends that ended up in my drawer and replace it with the appropriate counterpart so I could keep it. Although I'm sure a Singapore ten-cent isn't worth the same as our dime, it's still nice to look at when I get out my collection. There's one Mexican restaurant (or was it Chinese?) restaurant I went to once and it had paper notes from all sorts of countries. I hope they never get robbed or anything, because it's very nice to look at. It kind of makes me wonder how much American money has also gotten hoarded away in varying countries because they like to look at it too!

It's always funny when I get paid with a $2 bill at work, because there's not even a place for it on the reconciliation worksheet! I don't know why they are so rare...perhaps there is some merit to the "bad luck" theory...but I can't help but smile whenever I run into them. :)

Finding unusual currency is REALLY fun! I rarely ever see a $2 bill! I've been enjoying the many quarters now in circulation; Mt. Rushmore, Hawaii Volcanoes, national parks. . . YAY.
