I had a small flip phone, then a little bit bigger of a flip phone, I am now on my 3rd phone that has a screen on one side if I am remembering the right amount. I don't know what what you mean by why. Most people have some kind of phone nowadays and often need too.
I only use Samsung phones for many years because I can modify their operating system to prevent triggering my migraines and dysautonomia. I use a different launcher, certain Samsung themes, settings and apps to reduce the background motion, speed of scrolling and the contrast and brightness of the screen. Otherwise, I could not look at my phone screen for more than 5 minutes without getting sick.
I'm not sure how to know what the name of a phone is. Sometimes people will call the same device different things such as calling it a Samsung and calling it an Android.

It's a difference of hardware and software.
Hardware being the manufacturer of a particular cellphone (like Samsung) and software in terms of the operating system developer (Android).
Apple manufactures the iPhone, and develops iOS17 for a current OS.
My first phone was a little Siemens one, which I got when I was 13 but didn't really use. Then I got a Motorola flip-up phone for my 15th birthday, which I used more. Then I got another flip-up phone a couple of years later, which was the first one I had that had a video camera on it. I had that phone for a few years, then got my first touchscreen phone for my 22nd birthday. Ever since then I've upgraded a few times to new touchscreen phones. I'm due another upgrade in April, which I hate doing because all my song playlists get messed up when I transfer my files on to the new phone, and it takes ages to sort them out.
Started off years ago with the oldschool phones right after the brick that still had a pull up antenna.
From there graduated to my all time favorite Nokia flip phones until it was time to step up to a smartphone.
Nokias were bullet proof, but they got into the smartphone game too late.
The first two of those were Motorolas.
The first Motorola had a slide out textile keypad that was both cumbersome and hard to manipulate.
I got snookered on that one by a slick salesman
The next one with a touch screen was garbage too.
From there I went with Samsung products and never looked back.
Before I got my first Samsung android unit, I borrowed an IPhone and wasn't in favor of the lack of functionality as far as apps go outside of what Apple allows their users to have.
Pretty much what I do now is buy an awesome camera that allows me to make phone calls.
Having the internet in your pocket is a nice feature too.

I have had far too many to remember, much less list. I break, or more often lose them. Though after they started using non user replacable batteries, I had one that just wouldn't keep a charge anymore so I had to replace it (with a different brand of course so I didn't reward the manufacturer for going with a non replaceable battery). My first cell phone was a reconditioned bag phone. My current one is a Galaxy A03.
I always go with the cheapest one I can find with replacable memory card. Then I get an Otterbox case for it.

I didn't get a phone until I was going on 20 in the early 2000s. It was a huge thing that looked like a VCR remote control. I think it was a Siemens. I barely used it and didn't even know I could send Text Messages on it until someone sent me one almost a year later and I was confused as to what had happened! 
I got a Nokia 5110 for Christmas after that and I still have a visceral response when I hear the "Fuga" (I think it was called) ringtone. That's when I got into the habit of having my phone on silent.
I had one or two similar phones and got an Android phone in 2011, mostly so I had something convenient to read stuff on at break times at work. It wasn't great to use and I got a iPhone 2 years later which worked much better for reading stuff.
I now just use Android phones, I have a Motorola now. It's not an expensive one. In recent years I've used my phone to browse the internet. I used to prefer my laptop for that sort of thing but due to pain, I find it very uncomfortable now. You can use a phone in many different positions, so it's more comfortable for me to use.
Mostly my phone gets used to post here and for texting my girlfriend. It's rare that I make or receive phone calls. It's always on silent anyway.
I think I very much use phones on my own terms. I'm sure people get very frustrated when they try to call me and I've been unaware because I left it in the kitchen and didn't give it any thought for 6 hours. Usually if someone calls me, I will ignore it if I see the phone light up and I will mentally prepare to call back the next day
It actually kinda seems strange to me that no one seems to have sussed out that I will do just about anything to avoid making or receiving a call.

My first one was a Motorola D520. After that an Ericsson T18, then a bunch of Nokia models; 3310, 3100, 8310, 6510, 6230, 5210, 5140, 6700. Also had a Sonim XP3 at some point, looked like a phone Batman would use.
I loved the Nokia phones, there was a time where I'd buy a new one every 6 months or so. After all these, I switched to a Samsung smartphone. I don't really which I had, I lost most interest in phones by then. They became like cars to me, they all looked the same to me. Also didn't like how we went back to bigger and bigger (I get why, though). I think the Nokia 6510 was my favorite, so tiny!

My family was the first in the area to have a private line. This was considered quite strange and stand-offish. I've had rotary phones and number-key ones. I was quite happy with a VOIP service until I switched to a reasonably priced one and the quality declined to zero in two years. I went without for several years. My best friend quit having a phone at all after briefly trying a cell phone. I got one to do essential business during Covid. It is a Sonim Bolt, a gift from a tree surgeon who had chosen it to be heard over a chain saw, and survive falling from anywhere into anything in nature. It took me a long time to be able to find the dialing screen quickly, and have only sent one text after a huge struggle. I have read several, though. It has great battery life, and that can be replaced easily. When my car broke down, it saved me a great deal of grief. It gets used once or twice a month on average.
I am quite baffled that people will put up with the size of a regular smart phone for texting. I'd want a chord keyboard on something that size. Also baffled at all the work going in to making a seamless folding screen. A book format with a line at the hinge would be just as acceptable as a window with panes, or a dual-monitor setup. I don't use touch screens because of the abuse of the miners supplying the rare earths for them.

My first phone was a Nokia brick (a 101) 33 years ago, and I have had many since then, including a Blackberry in 2009, I believe....my three most recent have been a Samsung S5, a Samsung S8, and now, a Samsung S23+. My next phone will probably be an S25+ or ultra.
My first phone was a Motorola Flare. It cost around 15 cents, it was the heydays when they gave you almost free phones to sign up for a phone plan. Sellers on the streets gave you cell phones for almost nothing. After that it was all Nokia all the time. Best phones ever. The Finns knew how to make phones. I still have a Nokia 3310 somewhere and if I turned it on now, I'll bet it would still work perfectly. But Nokia stopped making phones.

I moved on and liked Nokia phones for a while. There were so many I had probably. I had a Nokia N91 one and that was soo heavy and used to drag weight on my trousers. I got it to play music on it.
I had a Motorola clamshell as well. I liked the shape of phone as well. The Motorola phone was a Pebl clamshell phone.
Then I recall moving onto Blackberry. I was a real Blackberry geek and had probably the full set and ended up with Blackberry Key One special edition in bronze. I liked them a lot and love the keyboards on them. I was sad to see them end. I liked the software on them and integration of the software socially as well. Certainly i dom’t think I liked the Blackberry chat or whatever it was calling itself. I have looked around for Blackberry replacements but didn’t see any.
Now I am just using a Samsung which I get free from my phone company and not bought a special phone as such as an upgrade in a while. I don’t particularly like my phone but it is free. I used to buy my own phone and just go contract free.

I think I may be missing using a phone that I actually like to use. For quite a number of years it was important to me. With Blackberry ending I just kind of gave up with it as there was no replacements. I looked around didn’t see any. They went to Key 2 and just ended. I have a Blackberry Keyone special edition as I mentioned.
When I posted I was thinking may be someone might know something as well on a phone with a keyboard. I am thinking of going to my Blackberry as I still have a perfectly working phone and I stopped using it as Whatsapp was saying they wouldn’t the Blackberry android software so it forced to start looking for an alternative. I am thinking of stopping using Whatsapp even though I don’t use it that much, so may be going back the Blackberry. The battery life isn’t that great but I could never find an original battery and didn’t trust the replacements that were generic. The keyboard may be needs a proper unpick as well in the joints.
I noticed no iPhone users replied. I have one which was given to me and it is ok, but it is for just my music. I was hearing years that the screens were delicate and smashed easily. My dad has one though it seems fine with him. I though like having my own SD card I can pull out myself and still on that exclusive Keyboard phone again.

I have been thinking about this more.. My history with Blackberry is long but I am just focusing here on the end of the era.
The Blackberry Priv phone I owned as well. I think it could have been my second to last Blackberry phone. I probably have photos as well but I got this one from online. This phone was 5solid and reliable and it is even using android and Blackberry software. I said to myself after using it I was missing the all in one. The Priv is a slider and pull out the keyboard when you want to use it. The screen is a good size as well for me at 5.5 inches. It is great for browsing. The key 2 was less than 5 inches. I am thinking of buying one again a new one.

I also looked up online again and saw some Titan phones. I wonder how they stack up against the Blackberry. They seem how I can say this rather good value lol and the Blackberry the Priv and Co had a hefty price tag on some and like the iPhone somewhat as well.

I have had quite a day today and no new phones to comment...No one would get me a gift that expensive lol except myself laughs and I would never expect it.
I did research looking if the Priv would be ok today...Some said it's still going but slow..I owned and it was fine to me in my hands...How would that work...Using it too much to make it slow...Didn't get it.
Someone else wrote Instagram you cannot use it..big one as for me as I have private one own which I treat a diary as well.Instagram for me was a massive flag to avoid it. Bad right as I wanted to buy it lol.
