Students experienced this?

I'm experienced in being bottom of the barrel socially. Administrative requests to tone down the cancellation would have had no effect then, and likely will have none now.

There are pretentious snobs, and there are pretentious slobs. They come at you from both directions.

I doubt if a polite request to tone it down is going to work. Rude, pretentious fools are everywhere, and they imagine they have a right to act like that.

Those who don't like being treated that way are best off selecting friends with fewer ego issues.

Have I experienced snobbery? Sure. I have a bad habit of laughing in people's face, though, and they get offended, which is even more funny.

P.S. I am a very nice person, but I have authority issues, and resent anybody who over plays their authority. In this case, "resent" means "laugh at and mock until they cry." If words can cut like knives, laughter is a chainsaw.
