Star is Born - a remake? When did the original come out?

The new one came out in the UK about last Wednesday as I recall.

Apparently it's a remake of an older movie, as is the usual thing for Hollywood lately, does anyone know anything about the original? Who was in it and stuff? I will check Wikipedia and IMDB at some point, I just wondered if any of our older members knew of it?
 
Lady Gaga played a major role in "American Horror Story" season 5: Hotel. I didn't expect much of her because her music and on stage performance are not to my taste, but she really surprised me and was the highlight of the series (behind Evan Peters who was just amazing). The movie "A Star is Born" is not my sort of thing, but she's proven to me she can act, in fact in my book she is a better actor than a pop star ;)
 
Haven't seen the new one yet, but Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson from 1976 will be a hard act to follow. Loved it. I have the soundtrack album. The original in 1937 was way before even my time.
