Spinning Wheels

Spin on a bullet or football adds stability and accuracy. A spinning bicycle or motorcycle wheel is a gyroscope, keeping it upright. The spinning golf ball acts like a lifting surface in the air, and a brake on landing. If enough spin is applied, it will back up!
 
An aircraft engine turns at a relatively slower speed to prevent the blades on the prop from going at a supersonic speed. At the point of transition that begins at the tip,when the speed of sound is broken by it,the screw effect is diminished along with the airfoil on it speed stalling so it can no longer do it's work. That is the same as a tire spinning on ice.

Many propellers on higher performance aircraft have constant speed variable pitch blades that act much the same as a transmission.The variable pitch allows for a constant engine speed thru a wider variety of airspeed and power condition. Setting on to a flatter pitch will allow the engine to run free and pull like crazy,but won't pull the plane very fast.Variable pitch props are set to full flat pitches for takeoffs like first gear in a car. After climb out and speed is desired over power for cruising the pitch angle is increased,the engine takes on a heavier load,loses it's ability to pull very hard,but can pull the aircraft faster as the screw now has a coarser pitch angle.

Hey, I'm an Aspie! I like details! Did you know deeper dimples give a ball more lift, and shallower dimples less lift? Plus the dimple patterns must be symmetrical all over the ball. That is required by the Rules of Golf. Anit-slice balls like the Polara have deeper dimples around the equator than the poles, providing self- correction in flight, contrary to Rule 1-2, Exerting Undue Influence on the Ball.
 
Played golf last Saturday, hit a 7-iron off the tee on # 8, the ball hits the green, hops once, then spins back three feet! My boss HATES spin, but he puts too much on it anyway. I saw him suck one back 15 feet right off the front of the green on # 5 last time we played together!
