RIP Brian Wilson

Written when Brian was only 23. A much simpler time for music, but listen to the complexity and the harmonies. Two of my favorites from the Pet Sounds album.


 
Ah yes. If anything I suspect most artists will recall the Beach Boys' ability at harmony. In this respect I think they may remain in a class all their own for some time. With much of the credit and talent going to Brian Wilson.
 
Friends in the band Anakin released some covers of the Beach Boys years ago. Good songs are always good songs. The vocalist, guitarist of Anakin specifically styled his vocals based on Brian Wilson to begin with. I can't deny doing the same a bit myself. Same goes for the band Weezer and then when Matt started The Rentals.
 
While Brian Wilson took the California "surf/beach sound" to another level, the Beach Boys weren't the first ones there. Reminded me of seeing Jan Berry & Dean Torrence magnanimously paying homage to the Beach Boys in the early days.

Ironic they recorded the song "Dead Man's Curve" in 1963 and three years later Jan Berry eerily emulated the song having a near-fatal auto accident in his Corvette having left from a final meeting with the draft board. His singing career was never the same, having gone from the draft status of 1A to 4F, having partial paralysis and traumatic brain injury.

For a lot of us, growing up as a teen in the 60s and 70s involved that cloud over our head, in the form of a draft card and the prospects of going straight to Vietnam. Especially for people like Jan Berry who had no kind of deferment to the draft. (Dean Torrence had no such issues as he previously served in the National Guard).

This all probably looks kind of silly in the 21st century, but for me I have to grin and recall in 1963 when I got my first "Super Surfer" skateboard with clay wheels. I guess for a brief time I was part of this genre!

Though to this very day I still play the Beach Boys' music regularly. :cool:

My father was a huge Beach Boys and Jan & Dean fan. Of course, with it playing all the time in the house, I became a fan, as well. I have a fair amount of their music on my iTunes play list. Every now and then it's nice to just sit back, relax, and remember a time when things just seemed a lot more simple and fun. I grew up on the drag strip with my father, all those old muscle cars, the smell of burnt tires and clutches, race fuel, the roar of a hot big block V8, the songs to go along with it, "Little GTO", "My 409", "My Little Cobra", "Little Old Lady from Pasadena", and so on. Great memories.
 
As they pass eighty , this year and next for most we lose them in ten years rock and roll will be dead .at least the people that played it.
