My son’s medication had to be changed a couple of times as he went through puberty.He is on medication for anxiety and ADD.
I encourage you to be aware of the possibility of his needs changing in that respect too.

@Sarah S - I don't push him. I took a strategy the 1st year of high school to put him in regular classes that were 2 grades up. Within 3 days he jokingly said "dad take me out of the dumb kid class it is way too slow for me" so we moved him to honors and AICE. I thought it was better to start low so he doesn't feel overwhelmed and make him feel better about himself than start him with AICE and AP classes overwhelming him then feeling like an idiot because he can't cut it. So next year he feels better can take more advanced courses.
Sorry about your mom. My father had vascular dementia that has similar symptoms. So I know how tough it is.
