Question About the Term Neurotypical

Well I have to go throw my Neurodiverse self out into the Neurotypical world for the day...

I think we are here to give them something to ponder??? So I will go be me, and see how it goes
Have a good day everyone. : )

Some really important terms to understand:

- Empathic
- Alexithymic

As those terms describes how people relate to one another through emotions, or not. Then:

- Casandra Syndrome

Describes a condition where someone is emotionally deprived, not validated, deprived of emotional reciprocity.

As compared to the general population the aspies are neurodiverse.

But the general population here is ND. That's the ...dare I say it..."norm" ND is typical on this site ? Within the population of this community?

(Not trying to be difficult, just trying to find the boundaries)

There's nothing mentally ill about autism. Yes, a lot of us do have depression but autism itself is not a mental illness regardless of any opinions you have about your own autism.

Of course its a mental illness, how is it not?
You can't just cherry pick and say what is a mental illness and what isn't.
It's a mental illness like Bipolar, Schizophrenia, Multiple Personality Disorder, etc

For most people, the category of brain-things called "mental illness" doesn't include every mental abnormality** out there, just some of them.

Autism is usually considered a "developmental disability" or "developmental disorder", which is a different cateogry of mental-abnormalities/brain-things.

No it's not, I have Asperger's, do I consider myself "Ill"?! Nope, contrary to popular opinion I am NOT mentally handicapped, nor is any other person with AS or Autism.

I do have a handicap in life, it is not a serious one but it is there, a handicap no matter how grand or small is still a handicap.

What really is the difference between a neurodevelopmental disorder and mental illness?

I don't really know....it's hard for me to make sense of.

The way I think about the difference is that the symptoms of a neurodevelopmental disability represent the person's normal or baseline mental state, whereas the symptoms of mental illness represent a deviation from the person's normal or baseline mental/neurological state.

But my way of making sense of it may not be accurate.

Read @tree's links on her post above, some clear opinions there. :)

A mental illness would include degradation of the mind and/or physical degradation of the brain. Autism is how the brain develops during the 25 years of growth to maturity.

Schizophrenia is a mental illness because the brain physical deteriorates upon onset of the disease. Same with depression, bipolar and Alzheimer's.
