Personal Trainer

I’m going to start strength training and doing cardio to keep my mobility as I get into my late 30s and beyond. I also want to lose 20 pounds. Has anyone ever seen a personal trainer? What was your experience like? I also plan on exercising at home, once my treadmill is ordered.

I am really into clothes and like to look good in my outfits. Right now, a lot of my clothes don’t fit properly. I’ve tried to lose 20 pounds, but can’t do it just by a calorie deficit. I tried counting and eating 800 to 1,200 calories a day. Still didn’t work.

The key component in that kind of services, personal anything, isn't the service but the person doing it. I haven't gone to a personal trainer yet, but I plan to. There are also dieticians, cosmetologists, coaches, stylists, music or language teachers, you name it. One trainer is absolutely not equal to another. Their competence varies very vastly. So you should look for recommendations, especially from people you know or if there is a large number of opinions on the internet, not all of them are going to be positive, but you can get a picture what the clients liked or disliked about the person. A good personal trainer should be professional and help set up a good exercise routine for you as well as take a look at your diet (people very often don't eat the right macronutrients to have optimal performance in sports and exercise).

At the gym where I frequented, we had 4 personal trainers on staff. They started out with an assessment and interview and then made a plan based upon your goals. Highly individualized. All kinds of people, from the elderly, to post operative injury rehab, to bodybuilders, to high school and collegiate athletes, to people like yourself. In my experience, most people don't care what you wear. Sweats, T-shirt, appropriate footwear, etc. Just wear something comfortable. If you're training right, you'll be sweaty and gross afterward. LOL! It's not a fashion show. ;):)
