Paranoid At Work

Do you feel paranoid at work?

Do you feel as if people are out to get you? Turn anything you say or do against you? Typical example would be the office backstabber. What are some situations in which you think you have been unfairly treated?

Actually I am going through something like that now, and it is very difficult to keep it under control. At my recent review my supervisor said I was basically doing a good job but my co-workers had told her that I seemed to be having problems retaining information, because of some of the questions I was asking. Now they don't know I have Asperger's so I can't fall back on that. Anyway, there's been a couple of incidents lately where I have asked for help and the person who is supposed to be training me said she would be over in a minute, but ends up helping someone else instead. "I got waylaid", was the excuse. So I don't know if the supervisor told them not to respond to me right away or what. But I have to tell myself that overall she seems friendly and helpful so I mustn't think the worst, at least not until I have more information.

Yes, yes that is it. Exactly.

I really hate it when the boss says something like your co-workers said. I wish they would tell me the exact situation. I over think it and maybe come up with 10 situations and make it worse for myself. Ok, They don't tell you who said what so you can't retaliate. Really? I will never retaliate, confrontation, I would rather call in sick to work. I would nor any Aspie corner someone about what they said.

So now I get paranoid to ask any questions thinking everyday is adding negative lines to the performance review.

Ok, it really is not that bad, but I think it might be an Aspie trait to do that, I mean over think everything and take it too literally? Do you think?

I guess I can be too self conscious knowing I can make a spectacle of myself. You?

I just have to keep repeating you are being really silly about all this stuff.

So now you are paranoid and self conscious every time you ask a question and get put on hold? Right?

It probably is an Aspie trait. I've been told too that I am too hard on myself. But if I am not too hard on myself, then someone else will be, and I can't predict what the consequences will be except in my experience they haven't been good. And I suspect that this trait is used against us, because supervisors know certain people will work harder when there is an element of uncertainty involved. It's like the horse in "Animal Farm", "I must work harder, I must work harder." The thing is once you get a reputation for being the "horse" you can never ever slack off, you can only raise the bar higher.

I think it is an Aspie Trait. I always freak when its March because that's when they do the review at my Grocery job I am Customer Service Manager. Every year my supervisor tells me to be worried and I get all worked up then I actually get my review and he tells me I am Mary Poppins (you know the practically perfect thing?) that I need to have more confidence in myself and that I need to work harder on letting things go ( ie don't stress so much about the small stuff or what other people are saying) yah right. Sooo I agree I think its hard to be in that middle ground at work. espcailly when you are asking for help with something (I think I got lucky with this supervisor as he tends to really focus on asking for help when you need it)

I just found out that one of my coworkers got fired about a week ago. He'd been transferred to another department so we didn't really see each other very much. He'd been there over 10 years and was an excellent worker. Apparently someone did not like him for some reason, because he told a friend that he thought he was being set up to fail. Then they started calling him into the office and telling him he was making too many mistakes. He said, show me the mistakes I am making. They would not do it. Shortly after that he was fired. Several of his colleagues tried to stick up for him and save his job but it did no good.

And then management wonders why there is so much paranoia at work!!!!

OOOO scary. That would be bad. You're right though. That makes people more paranoid about things when they already are paranoid.
