Nintendo Wii!

For my birthday this year, I’m asking for a new Wii console. The Wii is a very nostalgic console for me. Plus, there are some great games, such as Super Mario Odyssey, that I never got to play. What are your favorite Wii games? Which games do you think I should ask for?

One I know I am going to ask for is Warioware: Smooth Moves, which I loved playing at my friend’s house. I also have both Warioware titles on Nintendo Switch.

I really like the Lego games, especially Lego India Jones and Lego Pirates of the Caribbean.
I also liked the resident evil games on the wii. I still have a ps2 and a wii, I play them for a few weeks each year or so, it is always exciting and nostalgic.

The Wii had many great games. Here are my favorites.

Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
Metroid Prime Trilogy
New Super Mario Bros
MLB Power Pros
Dr Mario Online Rx
Pikmin

Xenoblade Chronicles was pretty good, but good luck finding it cheap: it was a stupid Gamestop-exclusive when it came out, so there aren't many copies floating around. However, it was rereleased on both the New 3DS (I still hate that name) and Switch.

A game I never got a chance to play but want to is Muramasa: The Demon Blade. I've played Odin Sphere from the same developers, and the rerelease of that game took some elements from Muramasa.

I have a Wii but I haven’t played it very much since I got it. I typically play games on my Switch. But I do have some games on the Wii that aren’t on the Switch such as Bully.

The Wii is good for running emulators for older systems. It is pretty easy to softmod using just a computer and an SD card. The classic controller is nice for NES and SNES in particular.

Oh I love the Nintendo Wii, it’s the console that holds so much of my childhood memories. I especially love replaying Super Smash Bros Brawl

Oh yeah, definitely.

If you got a Wii and you're at all interested in retro gaming - softmod it

Hell, even if you're not into retrogaming, you should absolutely mod your Wii.

Like do you have a lot of games lying around? You can back them up to an SD card or a USB drive and just...run them off that instead. You don't have to constantly be getting up to change discs.

Wii is awesome. My parents had a console that was collecting dust around 2015 so I softmodded it, put retroarch on it and still use it for that and playing old Gamecube classics to this day. The Tony Hawk games get a lot of mileage, and I'm kind of addicted to all of the extreme sports games from back then.

I'm surprised it still works, too. I think they got it in 2009, so it's got some longevity there!

It's a real shame the WiiWare channel was shut down, so many great hidden gems on there that I never got around to playing. Looks like the only way to play those games now is to softmod the console (already done!) and, er...sail the 7 seas while wearing an eye patch and with a parrot on my shoulder... 🏴‍☠️

Yes, the Wii is a reliable console and can take quite a beating. No red rings of death or yellow lights of death, unlike the early 360s and PS3s. I replaced the thermal pads on a Wii, but they were too thick so when I screwed the heatsink back on, it bent the motherboard. I didn't notice until years later when I opened the console again for another mod. Still works! Some modders even trim the motherboard to make a portable Wii.

That reminds me that the one really popular island doesn't exist anymore (or at least not in the way that it used to). Thankfully I have whatever Wiiware I wanted from a few years ago (probably just Cave Story and Frogger, weirdly), but preservation efforts really seem to be a losing battle these days, unfortunately. :(

One day we will have to tell future generations what certain games looked like because they will be lost to time

Hope you enjoy it when your birthday comes up! :) My favorites are the Star Wars and Batman LEGO games. As mentioned a few times in this topic already, I too use it (mostly, in fact) for emulation. My absolute favorite console is the Sega Mega Drive. Still have about 40 physical games, but I actually only still play them on Wii through emulation.

Might be good to check how you are going to hook it up, though. Personally, I have a 5 plug component cable that gives me a pretty good result. Sadly though, I will no longer be able to use this cable if/when I ever have to replace my TV. As supposedly (at least here) TV's no longer have the connection for it. I did get a Hyperkin HDMI cable, but I'm not sure how I feel about that one's result yet. Keeping that just in case, but I hope better options will be available should my TV ever die (it's over 10 years old already).

Of course, I think you can just use the standard A/V or a SCART cable. But maybe there are other people here that can help you (or us) to get a better picture quality.
