I sometimes have hallucinations that I smell very bad, despite the fact I used too much soap to make myself smell good, and I used too much deodorant to make myself smell good and I still have those hallucinations that I smell very bad.

I need help. Thank you!

An olfactory hallucination (phantosmia) makes you detect smells that aren't really there in your environment.

The odors you notice in phantosmia are different from person to person and may be foul or pleasant. You may notice the smells in one or both nostrils. The phantom smell may seem to always be there or it may come and go.

Phantosmia may be caused by a head injury or upper respiratory infection. It can also be caused by aging, trauma, temporal lobe seizures, inflamed sinuses, brain tumors, certain medications and Parkinson's disease. Phantosmia can also result from COVID-19 infection.

Talk to your health care provider if you have symptoms of phantosmia, so that they can rule out any serious underlying disorders that may be causing olfactory hallucination.

This distress that I am experiencing is not delusional, I am aware that it's not real, but it bothers me.

I will talk to my psychiatrist. Thank you!

That's quite common, and it's not a hallucination. This happens to people all the time.

If you have a rotten smell in your nose, it usually means that you have some kind of bacterial infection in your jaw, throat, or nasal cavity. Maybe a broken tooth that got infected? Maybe allergies that turned into an infection?

Maybe you need antibiotics.

Do you actually continue to smell yourself as smelling bad, or do you simply believe that you smell bad? If it's the second one, then it's a delusion, not a hallucination.

"Olfactory reference syndrome (ORS) is a psychiatric condition in which there is a persistent false belief and preoccupation with the idea of emitting abnormal body odors which the patient thinks are foul and offensive to other individuals"

I can relate to this. When I was younger, other kids always told me that I smelled bad (as far as I know, I didn’t, they were just bullying me.) As an adult I’m very hygiene-conscious. But I’m always convinced that I smell bad.

Also, recently, someone told me that I “smell like a fat person” o_O
I’m not THAT overweight, and I think I’ve actually lost some weight, but I have no idea what that means and it’s obviously an insult.

Sorry if tmi but the only time I legitimately smell bad is when I have a lot of breast sweat. Anyone who is big chested can probably relate

It's both, but can I call it an odd belief? I am aware that it's a false, this hallucination still bothers me.

This is the most low-key idea compared to all the interesting science here, but would it make any difference if you changed the soaps and deodorant you use?

This is difficult to explain, but sometimes for me smells can kind of get attached to each other and it’s really disorienting. Like maybe a bad smell has actually become associated with these hygiene products and changing them would allow some sort of reset?

It’s kind of a crazy idea to see it in writing, but maybe if you’re desperate

I didn't know that those products can make me have unpleasant smell, I always make sure my arms are clean and then use deodorant.

I think I could try to explain it a little better:
For me, if for whatever reason I end up smelling my laundry detergent and a stinky toilet at the same time, then for a long time afterward in my head, the detergent actually becomes more of a stinky toilet smell. Even though the stinky toilet is long gone, to me the detergent smells bad and usually I can’t go back to using it. It’s very odd, but I bring it up because my psychiatrist was testing me for some of the things that people are mentioning here when we discussed it.

That makes sense. I am sorry that am wrong. It's just when I have the belief, my mind was playing tricks on me, and I felt and smelled bad stuff from my arms that are not there.

One thing to consider is that odorous particles (and dust) can be inhaled and attach themselves to your nasal cavity. Over time this can build up and can in fact smell less than ideal.

When my wife comes home from the barn after riding her horse or if I am working on the property with the tractor, our lungs and nose can be filled with formerly airborne particles. We both started to use a Neti-Pot and it totally flushed out dirt and debris. It is a total life changer and I can actually breath considerably better through my nose.

I now wear a respirator when I am either mowing the lawn, blowing leaves or cutting fields.

Here is a link to the Neti-Pot I mentioned.

we all saw your pictures and you are definitely not fat. and I doubt that you smell bad. you have a big talent to find malicious and stupid people in your life.

I always say that I can smell most times bad people, but it´s more metaphorical than a real smell. most times I just feel that something is wrong with someone and that makes my alarm ringing.

I'm not hallucinating when my husband stinks after mowing the yard. Jeez, he sweats up a storm out there. His shirt is wringing wet with sweat after a couple of hours on the mower or tractor. It is real!

I did not feel well today, went to nearest police station and called 911. I told them about my anxiety and olfactory hallucination that I am experiencing, then they took me to the hospital. I was then examined, they found no drugs on me and I got a diagnosis of Anxious Mood Disorder. The examination was general and I was discharged and went home with my mom.

I am sorry that I am talking about this, I am not feeling well. I am sorry!

Their are two sources of smell on the human body odors caused by bacteria eating sweat, or slightly sweating giving off pheromones, or you could have something wrong with your sense of smell you may need to see a specialist. Fortunately my pillow smells like flowers when my head sweats lightly in the morning.

I have noticed that I experience this quite a bit. Not so much bad smells, but pleasant smells that trigger memories.

When living in the US, my sweat was horrible…smelled like ammonia and feet. When I moved to the UK, the smell has reduced and changed and I no longer use deodorant. My sweat no longer smells of ammonia and feet. Try changing diet and see if the smell changes…maybe more water intake. Maybe that will help?
