I've read conflicting information on that claim and that the cases in which the claim is based involved other drugs, not just Kava.

Sure, lots of recreational users try it, so...it was a fairly woolly claim iirc.
 
I have all kind of paradoxical or weird reactions from medication so I'm generally cautious.

The only one I've tried from the original list is kratom: I can only tolerate a very small dose and keep several different strains around the house and use it occasionally. One is good for pain, the other for focus and energy - I've never gotten "high" from it though.

Btw, it's legal here, just to be clear.
