Maybe it's not in itself, but it develops others. If the problem is that it's busy, exposure may build tolerance to that, which has much wider implications than elmo concerts. Learning to cope with what's difficult because the reward is something you really want. New experiences have many benefits.

I didn’t ask you what your perceived outrage was over, I asked you to show me where I said going to an Elmo concert was a life skill. You are unable to do that for the obvious reason that I didn’t say that.

Coping with social occasions is a need. Your life will be very limited if you're unable to leave the house, which will reduce your quality of life. She wants her son to have a better quality of life, like all good parents.

why should someone be subject to go to a place they don't want to go? especially if it is really not that important?

I had just explained in the comment you quoted - because being able to cope with that would improve that person's quality of life.
