Too often when I hear of 'meltdowns' the focus is how it has impacted others such as the cashier or the people in the store were distressed. Less frequently is it noted the distress of the person in the spectrum. A 'meltdown', however unpleasant to others remains a form of communication in regards to distress and those around would do well to listen and understand what in the environment is causing such to occur rather than dismissing or focusing solely on how others are affected. It is also important to educate others that this is not an issue of a person in the spectrum being difficult or contrary but rather a time when they need support when overwhelmed.
