'Meeting people'

OK, so I have had a serious relationship in the past, but I have never really 'casually dated' anyone before. I would like to do this at some point, because most of my characteristics prevent me from being the sort of guy gals want for a one-night-stand. And since I would rather have something a bit more meaningful to begin with, how does one open themselves up to that sort of romantic prospect? Are there places one can frequent besides bars where it is socially acceptable to start conversations with strangers? Note: I've tried online dating, and failed miserably. Are there sort of affirmations one can focus on to project less of an undesirable energy to those they are attracted to? What do some of you folks do to go out and meet people?
