Local ASD Community

Questella

Peace, Love and all that good stuff
Is there a place or a way to find out if there is any kind of asd community around me? I don't mean like autism speaks, but more like a "club" of people with asd for asd or something if that's makes sense... something more aimed towards adults...

I've seen groups on meetup.com, but I never tried any of them.

If there is a local autism society near you, sometimes they will run groups for autistic adults, provide space for people who run groups for autistic adults, or have contact info for people who run such groups.

Some of them are support groups, some of them are more casual discussion/social/recreation (like games nights or outings) groups, some of them strike me as therapy groups.

Try a search with the words "[name of your city / name of nearest big city / name of your county/state/province] autism society".

Hmm there's a autism society for cincinnati but it's for families of people with autism... :/ I think I may try searching around meet up...

Maybe I did find something on there i could try actually :)

I found a "Margaritas for Moms" Autism group, lol. They get together to drink and talk about autism. I can imagine when their children grow up starting an "Al-Anon for Aspies". :p

Seriously though, it seems Asperger's has been mostly seen as a childhood disorder and many adults get misdiagnosed or slip through the cracks and never get a diagnosis.

This is the one thing I fear at the moment, with a republican in office. Spending being cut, for instance, on the mental health insurance I have. I also get all my prescription $3 each at the moment.

the simpelest and easyiest way is to type in on google asd community in where you live i hope this helps :)

questella, just a thought but why not try asking one of these 'parents/families of autistic people' groups in your area if you can join up as you could potentially do a lot of educating and sort out a lot of ignorance there.
a while ago,i used to go to a specific asda-wallmart store every day and when id buy something,id stick my hand in the box of plastic coins at the til and take a handful-you use these to put in the clear/see through box of your preffered charity-with a section for each charity,i spotted one with the word autism in it,i knew it was for families of autism ,but i got them a handful of tokens everyday and they won the money from asda, i researched them and i spoke to them, and they asked me to come along to help them understand autism.
unfortunately i got ill-mentally and behaviorally, ended up in respite for a long time and got kicked out of my old care home so never went to the group but my long winded point is its worth trying as you could make a difference.

Yes, that's what I want to try.

Oh, I see!

My mistake; I had thought that you meant you found something on meetup because you had said that the local autism society was only for families and that you might search around meetup.

I hope it works out!

Eigh, there was absolutely nothing on meetup for around cincy :<

Most of that autism society seemed to be based for families kids except that one support group, so yay for the little things
