Very interesting! To date I still run two stereo receivers (one ancient, one not too old) using dipole antennas that go across the floor to my sliding door, then deliberately upwards in a 90 degree fashion. Gives me good reception to local FM, but with the Sierra Mountain range so close it makes FM a bit precarious in general.

Just stumbled across this and it reminded of my SW radio days. My aerial was a wire along the wall behind the bench to the corner, up the corner to the ceiling, then horizontally along the adjacent wall. This gave me a stretch of wire across an incoming wave from any direction/polarity. SW, the wavelength was in metres, so the stretch along the walls was 1/4-1/2 wave. I used to pull in signals from thousands of kilometres away, on a valve radio in the downstairs garage. Thanks @Judge for the memories!
