If you could do anything for the Autism community, what would it be?

*sigh* Do you really not see how presumptuous you are being? Yes, I have seen severe autism. Please do not assume that just because I disagree with you I therefore know less. It's sweet of you, I'm sure, that you want to make the blind see, but you just don't get to go messing around with the way someone's mind or body works without their consent. Your opinion is that they would be better off. Fine. You have the right to your opinion. But not all of your beneficiaries will share that opinion, and they have the same rights you do.

Well you see I decided to do something for ASD folks with my wish, but did not wish to forget the low functioning. Don't they have a much harder situation then HFA? But the problem is they can not be consulted, so you make your best choice.

Just because someone can not talk or function like those with HFA doesn't mean that they have a harder situation. If you really look at it, autism is hard to live with period. No has more autism than another, we just all manage things different. And yes, they can be consulted to a point. They aren't stupid you know. They just operate differently. That's all.
 
I'd set up volunteer- and staff-run peer groups and place posters all over the UK - coffee shops, libraries, public notice boards.. Autistics don't deserve to suffer a lifetime of isolation and loneliness with little hope of finding any way to socialise and form relationships, just because they think and act differently to everyone else.
I would provide access to social workers, councellors, mentors - advice!
We are human too - we have the same wants, needs, hope for the future, as anyone.. we may just not know how to move forward..
There needs to be public awareness of US, our diversity, our humanity.. people never get used to what they're not aware of.

If you can do something as phenomenal as make people into NT's, then surely a universal communication system would be child's play. Everyone deserves a choice. No one should have anything done to them without being consulted first.

Was my post moving things in that direction, or is there something that got deleted? I ask for future reference. Also, I would like to make a response about autistics benefiting from the experience of Deaf people. I've got one that I've already been working on. Nothing seems inappropriate about it to me, but I'm still new here.
 
There was a time when I was thinking "hmm, maybe a nice friendly autism forum would be a good invention. :D "
Then I searched on google and found this site, so idea's already been taken. :P

You haven't seen people with severe autism apparently. The are basically completely mentally disabled.

If I used my magic wish to give everyone communication ability then I used my wish and can't fix their disability. And a severely autistic person wouldn't even understand the question.

They really do need to. Slowly but surely, I think they're working on it. There are a few out there already pushing for their fellow professionals to adopt more open models and to realize we're not all incapable of taking care of ourselves or others, but they could use some help. I just hope they don't swing in the other direction and say none of us are disabled. As Tom said, those with severe autism are definitely in the "disabled" category. It's no more fair to push them beyond their limits than it is to hold us back.

Once again, you are assuming facts not in evidence. Someone can have the same facts as you have and still disagree.

Why not just give everybody a choice to begin with? If it's as bad as you say, you'll be vindicated. If it's not, then no harm no foul.

And a severely autistic person wouldn't even understand the question.

How do you know that? Because it "looks" as if they don't understand? For people who supposedly can't communicate, it seems that everyone else has this peculiar ability to know exactly what they are thinking.
 
I'm going to start deleting posts on the subject of whether or not we should change the severely autistic.

Tom: my two cents: since this is a purely imaginary scenario in the first place, why not tweak it a little bit and say you would cure only those severely autistic persons who wish to be cured. Let's say that (in this imaginary scenario) your power would include the ability to know the wishes of people who can't speak. And let's end the discussion of this scenario.
ancusmitis: Your point of view is not bad or wrong, but a previous Moderator basically said that he didn't want this debate to continue. So let's not continue to stir the flames.

Any more posts that continue this little sub-discussion will be deleted.
