I think i have aspergers but i'm not sure...

Jessikar

Well-Known Member
I've done two main tests for aspergers. The result i got on one the first time i did it was 38/50 - A 'normal' person would score about 16-20. The other test i took i got 140/200, considered to be 'likely aspie' and it online diagnoses anything from depression to schizophrenia to aspergers based on 150 questions.

In terms of social problems... I don’t understand people in general and I never have. I’ve never been able to hold down friendships because I’m not interested in the ‘social’ things that they like to talk about. I could be talking to somebody and then get bored easily and not know what to say to keep it going, so I just wouldn't bother, or i would just turn the conversation onto myself. I want to have friends but I just can’t. This is the main reason why I blamed it on depression because I believed this had started to happen after i was bullied.

But since then I’ve realised it was way before then. Even in Primary school, I didn’t have many friends and i was very authoritive and aggressive and manipulative of other children. I was always getting into trouble for not listening or for pushing people. I didn't particularly like playground games or playing make believe. I always thought I was better than others... no idea why.

Other things I’ve noticed. I have had weird obsessions e.g. Power Rangers (big one), beanie babies and Lego. In secondary school it was just computers and talking to people online. I was more intrested in doing my work and it gave me much more of a thrill than trying to communicate with people. Nowadays it's mental disorders though really and I’m planning to do Psychology at Uni

I also have an obsession with car number plates and i have no idea why. I hate noise. When my dad eats it drives me up the wall and I can't be in the same room as him. I hate going to the college refectory because it’s too noisy.

I have a very strong relationship with a boy with aspergers. I class him as ‘normal’ and he classes me as ‘normal’ to him. But he finds people who would be rated as normal as weird. So I’m confused.

Can anyone please help me?

x

You seem like an aspie to me. Most aspies have problems with social skills, which is usually why they don`t get friends easily, and you are not interested in other "normal" people (Like me). And you also have obsessions/things you are interested in and want to think and talk about them. Its also seems that you are much more comfortable with other aspies. And even the tests showed that you might be an aspie. But to be 100% sure about that I suggest you go to a psychologist or a therapist and let them make a few test to you and listen their opinion. But they might be wrong too sometimes tho.

But where you needed help exactly...?

I just wanted some aspie opnions of what's aspergic and what's normal.

I want to see a psychologist but i've heard it can take months for a diagnosis whereas i would prefer just a 'Yes' or 'No' answer.

Thank you for your response

Glad I could help. And those psychologist`s opinions are not so important in the end. It does`t matter are you an aspie or not. The main thing is that you accept yourself as you are. And remember this; I think that Asperger is not a disorder but an ability which you are have to take advantage of so you can succeed in life.

From reading your post, I would say you have Aspergers. There are many things within that post that can be linked to having AS.

Yea, that definitely sounds like an aspie alright. :) But don't see it as a bad thing... sometimes there are good things about being an aspie, just gotta learn to live it. :D I was kinda like you when I was young with my obsessions. :)

It sounds very much like you are an aspie. Do you also have problems with eye contact? Either being uncomfortable with it or staring and making other people uncomfortable?

RE: "When my dad eats it drives me up the wall and I can't be in the same room as him", I had exactly the same issue with my father, I couldn't stand to be in the same room as him when he ate. Mealtimes were a nightmare and I couldn't wait for them to be over. Same with sitting near people at work who make annoying noises - slurping, snorting, grunting, whatever.

Just another question... :rolleyes2:

Can the 'obsessions' be people (say of the opposite sex mainly) rather than just objects...?

Thank you.

I assume though. Although everyone gets "crushes", if that is what you mean.

Obsessions tend to be topics - like dinosaurs or astronomy, for example. Or activities, like sharpening knives or growing herbs. Aspies tend to become "attached" to objects as children.

I get obsessed about cleanliness as well (though I also suspect I have OCD but yeah).

I refuse to touch bins and toilet lids. It's weird cause even if i do accidentely (like with a finger tip), i feel contaminated and have to scrub it clean!!!

Hmmm... I think that having obsessions towards people is a different thing than having obsession to objects/things/stuff.

But, aspies are individuals as well as anyone, so why not.

It certainly sounds like your an aspie. Think of it as an alternative thinking style, and once you've got over certain problems (social/hypersensitivities), you can think of it as an advantage.

The biggest advantage I have found about knowing I have AS is that I learn differently. If you have a piece of work that isn't particularly interesting, involve it into one of your obsessions. I once had an obsession with HTML. I managed to make my media coursework interesting by incorporating it into a website.

Just have to add... I know it sounds slightly big-headed but I used to think of myself as better than other people. In primary school, I recognized that liking light bulbs more than I liked Action Man must mean I am clever. I still like light bulbs lol!

My boyfriend said he believes theres a strong likelihood that i have it for the following reasons:

  • I say that my brain feels like it HAS to be doing something productive all the time even if i'm really tired and if i'm not, my brain never stops 'buzzing' with boredom.
  • I class '9am' as a lie in whereas other people wouldnt for the reason that i feel like i need to be doing something productive with my time.
  • I speak way too fast

...and other reasons already mentioned.

I think i'm going to go to the doctor tomorrow.

I don`t think that a doctor can help you much. Unless by doctor you mean a good psychologist or therapist. Aspergers cannot be cured. You can have some treatment which might help you to cope with life better as an asperger. Aspergers will always be part of you and part of your life. I wrote this earlier but I write it again; Remember, aspergers is not a disorder or a disease. Its an ability that you should take advantage of.

I'd like to make note that none of us here are qualified psychologists or w.e(afaik) and also have a bias considering we all have AS and probably(not definitely) AS is the disorder we know the most about.
There's a lot of disorders which could fit your traits, and a psychologist would know best so yeah...
Just saying 'cause some people insist to the psychologist they have AS when the truth is it could be any number of things.
But I agree it does sound like you have AS. But I couldn't be sure :P.
And you could ask a doctor but sometimes they're not very helpful. Even some psychologists aren't.
EMZ=]

Yeah but last time i went to him for 'depresion' (didn't have it), he referred me to someone else, so mabye he can do the same this time. I don't know any ohter ways of finding psychologists

The best way to find a psychologist is to ask your regular doctor. He/she should be aware of specialist doctors like psychologists in your area.

The post is a good one. Anyone’s audience is a group of individuals. Nothing can change it.
Nice article written here. I got to know a few more things about the topic
