I think Duane meant well. His hobby (and mine) helped him and he wanted to try and support his fellow aspies in an altruistic manner.
If the offer and the intentions behind it came across somehow wrong please forgive him. After all, having difficulty putting things across socially is a common aspie issue.
Join the club! I have my obsessions as well. Duane has his amateur radio. I have my freediving. If you want my personal opinion. I think the sport of freediving should be practice by any aspie. I find for myself that the therapeutic effect of freediving for someone who has sensory issues (like me) to be very wonderful and calming. But hey! that's just me.
I guess it's easy to see that just because your this kind of person (ie. aspie in this case.). That you assume that others of the same kind are gonna like the same things you do. Which of course is not true and I've had to learn that lesson the hard way. Sadly.
