When you said heroes, I thought you meant the characters fighting to survive against the killers - not the killers themselves, who I consider the villains.

Maybe Hannibal Lector? I never found any of the traditional slasher villians that scary or interesting. But first time I ever watched Silence of the Lambs as a kid was also my first Anthony Hopkins movie. He played him so well that to this day when I see the actor I cannot separate the two. Even though he's a nice guy it's hard not to see him as Dr. Lector. (Wait does he count as a hero?? Lol)

That cursed button. I always scream everything l watch this. The ending is a cop-out. But l love the eyeball in the cake scene. That's hilarious. Better tighter ending would have been great. The older lady is upset, because she can't get a bank loan. But there is a dark entity that re-purposes itself in a goat, a cat, etc.

Speaking of Ash Williams, how about this artwork from one of his crossovers with Freddy vs. Jason.
Sometimes it is the monsters that are the victims.
My favorite is "Get Away From Her. You *****! Ripley.

For Jason, I would say yes. For Freddy, not so much.
Yeah, Ellen Ripley went on a great hero's journey from Alien to Aliens. Too bad Alien 3 was a depressing finale and Alien: Resurrection was a weird mess of a movie.
Reviewing my response to the question, my mind immediately gravitated to the TV series Hannibal; quite possibly the most riveting and chilling TV series ever produced, made more astonishing that it was broadcast in the US on NBC over public airwaves.
That Hannibal Lector, portrayed by Mads Mikkelson, is a monstrous and frightening figure, a charming and insouciant villain; so much more so than Anthony Hopkins in the cinematic version. I am sure any horror aficionado worth their credentials has to be aware of this show. If not, I strongly urge you to seek it out. The show verges on high art at times, in my mind, with imagery that is both stunningly alluring while at the same time being absolutely repulsive; but then I am slightly twisted, yet very normal in my everyday life. Three seasons of remarkable television and it could have had more without a single complaint from me.
(Edit: I neglected to mention that the character of Will Graham, Hannibal's nemesis/sparring partner [played by Hugh Dancy] is diagnosed with Asperger's)

Okay, this is going to take some explaining. Remember Micheal Jackson's music video, Thriller? I saw it when I was, like, 6. It was the coolest thing. There were all these monsters dressed up in rags -- my little friends were saying, "no-no-no, that's a zombie!" -- and there's Micheal, leading them on this elaborate street dance through the fog and smoke. It was, I think, Halloween, and I had no concept of what 'dead' meant but my little friends convinced me I should be scared. I don't know. I've seen the video somewhat recently and really all I saw when I rewatched it was this mental image of this photo someone took of all our little faces trying to look scared--except, I look kind of like Alice in Wonderland. Kind of like in stupified awe, you know. (Wow....) The innocence of small children...
Other scary movies movie heroes? I'm going to name Church, from Stephen King's IT. Never saw the movie but we had a black cat with no tail show up after the movie came out. Someone said they found him in a cemetery, so we named him Church and, just like in the movie, although he disappeared soon after that. (Kind 'a creepy, if you ask me.) I don't know about the hero part but surely that cat sure had an extra life.

I found Annie Wilkes from Stephen King's Misery to be particularly creepy; especially with how her mood could swing from calm, friendly and polite to angry, malicious and flat out psychotic from the tiniest provocation.
Kathy Bates really did the role well in the movie adaptation - playing the obsessive fan of an author who, when said author is injured and left in her care, resolves to take care of him, only to reveal her dark side when she finds out what he's doing to her favorite character from a book series that she's a fan of.
