Hi, I've recently being diagnosed with ASD and stumbled across this forum in my quest for information.

I'm female, in my mid 50's and have spent my whole life not fitting in/square peg in round hole kind of thing. I've seen lots of GP's about various ASD related stuff and when I've asked about the possibility of being Aspie, have been told so many times along the lines of 'don't be ridiculous'. It was during an appointment with a neurologist (for results of a recent MRI scan) that he said 'you do realise you're on the autistic spectrum don't you?'. I said that I'd suspected it for decades but no-one had taken me seriously. Ever.

The neurologist referred me to neuro-psychiatry for ASD assessment, but I didn't want to wait for an NHS appointment as the wait time is well over 12 months and patience is not something I possess. I went via the private route and received a positive diagnosis. The relief has been overwhelming. I finally feel like I've found my place. So many of my quirks/likes/dislikes/mega sensory issues/black and white thinking/pedantic behaviour - all explained with the diagnosis.

And now I've found this forum :D

Yes I think the powers that be have finally realised females are also on the spectrum! I would bet in similar numbers too. It's a relief and a reveLatin isn't it? However I don't know what you mean about quirks and pedantic behaviour.... just joking. o_O

This was exactly me last year, suddenly discovering all those facets of square-pegness, the oddities and inexplicables of a lifetime of not being quite the same, all had one single cause, and meant I could stop struggling to try and change myself into someone I wasn't in order to try (and still fail) to fit in.

Welcome. I have learnt a lot here, it is an excellent place to be.
 
Thank you all so much for your welcome messages. It's really reassuring that I'm among people who understand what it's like to live in a world where you don't quite fit. But here we do fit :)

It feels quite alien to be accepting of who I am and I'm hopeful that my diagnosis will give me the confidence to just be me.

ive been diagnosed two years still can't grasp it ,talking on this forum makes me think about it.
 
Streetwise - I'm the opposite. I grasped it straight away. In fact, I positively embraced it and cannot think of one negative thing about being diagnosed. It's actually made me feel more settled with who I am.

you find some people might be patronising as though you're mentally deficient

Might I ask where you went for a private assesment please?

And will I have to sell a kidney to pay for it?

I have a quote from a company in the North West.
Just wondering whether or not costs vary across counties or companies?

I haven't found that (yet), but I've been quite cautious so far about who I've shared my diagnosis with. And if I'm ever faced with being patronised over being Aspie, the person will most likely get short shrift ;)

I went to Action for Asperger's which is in Northamptonshire. It's a registered charity and the cost is, I believe, far less than a lot of other private places. They have a website which will tell you about the process and costs involved.

Has your GP made the referral via the NHS? Some places in the UK have shorter waiting lists than others, so you may be lucky and not have to wait too long.
 
Yes, I have already been referred and received confirmation of referral by post...and a paragraph on waiting lists and inferences that an assessment may take some time (rolls eyes)
