Good Memory

Yeah when I'm reading I often need to go back and re-read the last few sentences, same as when I'm writing, I need to go back and read it, usually to make sure what I'm writing makes sense.

I tend to go off on a bit of a tangent and forget what the original point was
i think that also refers to 'working memory' ksheehan, working memory is the memory that is happening in the here and now if you know what i mean. so it sounds like your working memory sucks like mine to but thats part of executive dysfunction, have you heard of it? ive found a great article by musingsofanaspie on autistic executive dysfunction including memory issues: https://musingsofanaspie.com/executive-function-series/

No I've never heard of it... I'll have a read of that, thanks toothless :)

it would be wearisome to hold things in your conscious mind while processing them.

That is exactly what I go thru every waking hour. I was not able to put it into words like you did. I over process my surroundings to the point that my sleep comes on like narcolepsy each time. I feel it is due to shutting down external influences so my brain can continue to process information without being undisturbed.

My long term memory goes back to at least 18 months, when I described an incident my mother could date. Mostly things are extremely vivid and well-recalled.

Until I started getting sick. Under stress my short-term memory is like a car with a bad carb -- the more I hit the throttle, the more it sputters and stalls.

I am convinced (now that I am getting better and so is my memory) that a lot of our short term memory issues are not necessarily our brain structure, but a reflection of the terrible stress we are usually under, and trying to cope with.

I have written both code and fiction, and in each case I am left alone with no distractions. In each case I can build up a very elaborate structure and remember all its pieces and how they all work together. In each case, I don't have short term memory problems :)

I can remember events from when extremely young even from when I was in a cot. I also remember random events throughout early childhood until now (34 years old). I remember details where people I was sitting with at a table were positioned, and see it like a movie or photo, in colour. My short term / and what psychologists called working memory, is quiet bad.

I have a very good long term memory, I can remember particular incidents in detail from many many years ago.
I can remember names and places from when I was very young, and always remember birthdays, phone numbers and addresses.

My short term memory on the other hand is bloody awful. I'm forever forgetting appointments and dates for things at my kids school, forgetting things I need to do or things I need to get at shops etc.

Is this something that is attributed to AS?

Hmm, I think you'll have to get in line behind me for having a good long term/episodic memory. (In addition to all you just mentioned- sorry but I gotta brag about this) I can remember trainers and coats people wore in school, names and surnames of all people I ever went to school with, loads of school and home memories others never remembered, entire transcripts of TV shows and films (but only those watched as a kid/teenager), dates I bought many items of clothing and other items (same for other people) and even dates I noticed changes in (ahem puberty). I could give you a very vivid timeline of almost anything that has ever happened in my life (doctors have found this very useful when trying to help me).

Anyway, I sometimes find my short term memory to be a bit of a let down, but only because I'm sooo busy with work these days, prior to this it was average.

Mines definitely not that good lol

I have no real appreciation/care for my looks, physique or ability to socialise or be liked by others (whether I do or do not etc), but my mind and especially my memory is something I take great pride in and one of the things (which I'm sure we all have) that make me very special. I'd never want to live if I started losing my long term memory, it's very preciouse to me. Perhaps you can relate to some of this yourself. Could've sworn you said in another post that you DIDN'T have aspergers, or am I mistaken?

When I first came here I hadn't even considered it.

The more time I've spent here the more I've realised I think I have aspergers

I had a great memory when I was younger. I could recall details of people who I met briefly.

Now I have to make more of a conscious effort to remember things.

I used to have a really good memory, but it's gotten a little fuzzy since I was put on medication for other issues I have. I guess it's a trade-off.

My memory is strange. I forget small things in a short period of time. I have to do a pat down everyday before I leave the house because I will forget my keys or my wallet. Just the other day the only thing on my agenda was to shave my head. I kept reminding myself throughout the day...but still forgot to do it. I have to GPS everywhere I go, even to work and I go there everyday. One of my friends whom I actually think to call on his birthday informed me that every year for the past 10 years I have always called him the day before his birthday thinking it was his birthday.

On the flip side I can remember a film directors entire catalogue. I can remember conversations from decades ago in their entirely. I can remember what people wore on specific days. My roommate has taken to telling me his schedule because I always remember it and remind him of things.

Yes and no. Without an in depth exam, there is no way to tell it is or isn't just your particular talent. Being different does not mean your AS.

Seems AS has become a convent way to explain away our concerns. I am told since I can do things others can't, I must have high functioning autism. I think it's just as likely they just don't want to deal with me and it's some sort of put-down.

Just my personal observation, but AS seems to come with a good deal of emotional issues. I know a person with AS and my heart goes out to them. I am
so thankful emotional issues are not part of whatever I am.

I did have an exam as a teenager. Nobody put a label on me. They did say I was different and should expect to have a very different point of view. 20% of my group do not survive to age 21. I'm 69 now.

I'll sink back into the woodwork now. :)

I have patchy memories of events before my 3rd birthday, and can remember bits of that birthday and Christmas. I remember my first day at school and what I was wearing that day, and the buttons on the cardigan of another girl who started in the same class the following term! I remember things that happened during that year at school, which I'm sure everybody else will have forgotten! Needless to say, I can tell you who all my teachers were right through school and college, and what subjects they taught. However, meet me, say in church, and tell me your name, and by next week, I will have forgotten it!
I don't remember long numbers unless I make a conscious effort to do so, or hear them so many times, I can't help remembering them. Give me 2 or 3 Bible passages to look up, and I'll have to ask you to repeat them separately, each one when I'm ready to find it. I'm getting better, but if you ask me where something is in the Bible, I can tell you if it'd Old or New Testament, and probably if it's in the Gospels or epistles, but that's about it. I have learnt where some of my favourites are recently, but it's a long haul - one in Jeremiah, I still keep forgetting exactly where in that book it is, and it's a long book to try to find it! I do have a couple of books on where to find it in the Bible, but they don't have everything in them.
At least reading up on autism has explained why the above happens, and I'm not alone in this.

Learning here, how to work this tjing, be patient.
I'm researching, trying to find out if I have aspergers, at the moment, but the bible verses, sounds exactly like me. Can remember the verse, but not the 'address', numbers are a problem, as well as dates, words are better, and a photographic memory.

Google the quote. The internet is full of bibles.
