Fish Tank

Here are a few photo's of my 29 gallon fish tank. I have 6 glofish and 4 guppies so far. It is a new tank and I don't want to stock it too quickly.

Yes the plants are real. I thought it would help cut down the ammonia.

Is your HOB filter an aquaclear? And I can't seem to see what male-female guppy ratio is in your tank. I generally keep 3 females to every male. 2-2 is fine also. And the plants don't remove ammonia, they remove the nitrates (after product of ammonia) but they still help a lot of water quality.

Nice set up! Keep up the good work

I have a Marineland setup with the biowheel. My guppy ratios is 2:2. They seem to be doing well, but I would like to get two more. I think I am going to get blue ones to change the color in my tank a bit. Right now my tank consists of yellow and orange. Some blue guppies would break it up. Thank you for the info, I though the plants ate the ammonia, I did a water test this morning and I am at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and 5 nitrates.

The two new ones you get should be females. Males harass the girl guppies, so having more females spreads the harassment out and gives some of them a break. It lowers there stress levels. You should think about getting some breeder grass or making a breeding mop if you want to keep the fry. I've found that raising and nurturing the fry is one of the most rewarding parts of the hobby.

But your filtration sounds amazing! I've never wanted to spend the money on a bio-wheel. Those things are top of the line! I usually just stick to UG filtration. Simple but very effective.

Nice tank :) Did you do a fishless cycle or are you currently cycling the tank with the fish? If so make sure you keep an eye on the ammonia and nitrite levels, if you know any local fishkeepers see if they'll give you a small chunk of filter pad or a bio ball or ceramic ring or even a handful of gravel from a well established tank will have enough good bacteria to give your filter a boost.

I thought I'd share some of my fish tank photos (this seemed the most appropriate thread);

I really miss keeping fish :( I'm gonna have to clear out some space and save up and get a little tank, maybe a 15g or so.

I hope its already cycled. Thats much too many gups and dans for it to be a fish-cycle :twitcy:

Nice tanks Kelly! I think well planted tanks look really nice, I would like to get some more plants but I'm not sure what to get as of yet. Do you have any suggestions for a 29 gallon tank?

I did do a fishless cycle, it took about a month and a half to complete.

It's to be expected though, most people start fishkeeping with no prior knowledge, end up on fish forums get a new A ripped because they have fish in already without doing a fishless cycle. That used to annoy me so much when a newbie would post not knowing that they were putting the fish in danger and then some "better than thou" know it all would lay in to them...ahhh it's making me mad just thinking about it. It's one of the reasons I lost some of my fish passion because of idiots on forums being so horrible.

So glad you did a fishless cycle (I'm sure your fish are too), I can't tell from your pics but what kind of lighting do you have? Really hardy / low lighting plants that are great for beginners are java fern, java moss & anubias(tied on to rocks, wood etc). Cabomba caroliniana is a fast grower so is elodea canadensis, crypts are good plants but can take a while to really get rooted. Floating plants would be good for the fry, something like Salvinia natans or pistia stratiotes will grow like wildfire.

I bought a Marineland Aquarium kit that came with white LED's for daytime and blue for night time. The specs are as follows:

42*White/3*Blue**********
.11W*LEDs
Total wattage
4.62*

I currently have a Bacopa and a Cabomba. They seem to be doing well too.
