I just plain wont interact with or use a service that requires tipping, period.
I'm like, it aint my job to pay your freaking employees. I buy the thing, you give me the thing I bought, and if you cant handle all the other parts yourself, you shouldnt be running anything at all. Get out of business and pick up that janitor bucket over at the local fast food place, maybe learn some important lessons there, like how to not suck.
And of course, being in the US, I know most owners of any business type where tips are a thing, they simply WONT pay their employees fairly, so... I aint gonna use their junk.
It's been a very long time since I was in the work force, but I have worked at such places, and one of the most irritating moments ever was discovering that even the freaking tips I was directly given by people STILL werent really mine. The stupid company of stupidness tried to take a percentage of even that. I dont remember which company, they were all pretty stupid.

It is not the individual waitperson’s fault they are not well paid. So many people work at substandard pay in the US. I can’t see not tipping because the company doesn’t pay well.
I now live on a fixed income and need to take care with spending. But if I’m in a sit down restaurant I will leave a 15-20% tip. And I will round up.
That waitstaff might be living in her car, or caring for small children, or both.

It started during the Covid pandemic because few people were physically eating in restaurants and pickup/takeout became the norm. I think Americans felt they needed to help wait staff who no longer could earn tips the conventional way. People are not okay with it now that the pandemic is over. It is an ongoing point of contention, and most customers do not tip before they receive their food. During the pandemic, my husband and I tipped very generously when we picked up takeout food because, otherwise, those servers would have really suffered from lack of income from gratuities they normally got from in-restaurant food service.
In the US, tipping is common for jobs that require personal service to specific customers. Such as services provided in restaurants, hairdressers, etc. that deal directly and personally with customers. Field workers, street cleaners and game designers are not providing personal services to specific customers.
I only tip in restaurant expecting good service, have never tipped for haircut. cut it right or I will not come back.
When I was 20 there was a great little Italian restaurant near where I lived that I went to often with my girlfriend. The waiter there was amazing, you never noticed he was there but glasses kept refilling and empty plates vanished on their own. The thought of tipping him never even entered my mind and wouldn't have entered his either, it just wasn't a part of our culture. I did have a couple of conversations with him though and told him I found the service nothing short of amazing. He told me he was training for his Silver Service.
Then one evening I took my girlfriend there and the place was almost empty. The food was just as good as always but it was the owner of the place that was serving us. She was a perfectly good waitress but didn't come close to the other waiter. Naturally as I'm settling the bill she asked me how the meal was and I told her it was as delightful as always.
Then just to make conversation I asked what happened to the young waiter. She said he left because he wanted more money. I said "That's a shame, he was worth it.". She snapped at me "I know that now, don't I!".
That's the way our society always was. We saw tipping in American movies and we saw it as just rich people showing off how rich they are by rubbing worker's noses in it. The closest we ever came to tipping is when we enjoyed a barman's company and we'd by him a drink to encourage him to stop and talk a bit more, but that ended with new workplace relations laws and they're not allowed to drink on the job any more.

One of the things I best like about this website is the opportunity to learn about customs and traditions in other countries. There is never any need to sneer at, criticize or belittle how other countries do things. Use this website to learn something new.
That there are all sorts of things that differ one nation and culture from another, and that what may work for one doesn't necessarily imply it works for another, let alone all others.
Though I have always loathed the very idea of tips, simply given the occasional social awkwardness of a group setting, where some at the same table may not tip as much as another. And yet no one is expected to always collude with another regarding the quality of service. And just the trouble of having to do such calculations in my head in a short amount of time.
The whole process has always made me feel uncomfortable, even after a nice meal.

Once I went to lunch with some 8 or more young women in a classy restaurant. The Berhgoff in Chicago, if any of you know it. This was back when women were not permitted entry to the dining room, but could have lunch in the basement.
We all had a great time, talking and laughing, and we spent a bit of time there at a large round table. Everyone participated. We got the bill and assembled cash to pay for it.
It was time to leave the tip and we all were pretty young and inexperienced so there was much discussion. Finally one person threw some change in the center of the table. This was followed by more change. We started giggling and we all threw more and more change in the pile. The pile grew higher and higher.
Don’t forget this was back when change actually added up to real money. We all about died laughing in anticipation of the waiter’s reaction when he had to pick up all that change.
It still brings a smile to my face.

Now that I'm in Prague, waiters here ask you when you are about to pay the bill smth like "would you give me 5% tip?" And ahhh it's so hard for me to say no when someone asks for something like that... But he did nothing, he brought us pizza, I could have brought it myself if I was allowed in the kitchen... :')

I hate tipping culture. It infuriates me. I think it's unethical and exploitative to all parties involved beyond the people at the very top of the wealth heirarchy including wealthiest shareholders (ie those owning majority of shares) and highest levels of management in the giant evil corporations that own all the businesses where the poorest among us are forced to shop ...
Because choosing ethical retailers with higher prices is either a literal impossibility or means starving more often and/or doing without other necessities (like wound dressings, basic health monitoring gadgets like pulse oximeters, blood pressure monitors, spacers for inhalers, feet/wheels/repairs for mobility aids, injection supplies [ironically your vial of injectable necessary-to-not-die-or-to-avoid-severe-and-maybe-permanent-physical-damage-from-uncontrolled-disease medication is usually covered but the needles, syringes, alcohol swabs, and sharps containers are not - and in the space of a few years the price of these things has quadrupled (increased by approx 400%) while benefits and wages have increased maybe 2-4% if at all] or medicines that public health insurance doesn't cover and you absolutely need).....
It depends on where you live and on factors like whether you can go to the store yourself and haul your groceries home (which I cannot anymore) .... in many places in Canada that are the least population dense, you might have only one or maybe two stores within any realistic/reasonable distance (ie an hours drive or less one way) for purchasing food and basic hygiene supplies and more often than not these days both will be owned by the same huge corporate conglomerate....so "voting with your dollar" is not always actually possible even if you have enough dollars to use them in this way.
I usually tip the bare mimimum amount if I order heavy grocery items or quite a lot of bulky things at once, despite that I cannot afford it at all ... And only because I know lots of people in this world including many delivery drivers are judgemental, ignorant, and petty, with zero social awareness or imagination who presume if you order groceries to be delivered to your home, or your order contains anything prepared or spendy allergen-free anything, its because you're a lazy and rich person with money to burn ordering "lifestyle" spendy items as a privileged preference and not actually according to a real need (like having food allergies, mobility impairments, and severe lifelong adaptive functioning challenges that limit choice and how much you can realistically prepare meals from scratch ingredients without simply wasting a lot of food and money and going hungry anyways expecting impossible things of yourself) (FACTS:

The sad fact is that people tend to be extremely presumptive and irrationally judgemental; And with grocery delivery, if you don't tip some delivery driver (and actually, I have often found -- even when you do -- presumably because a $5 tip doesn't meet their expectations, even if they only had to carry one non-cumbersome, light-weight bag or box from their car to your door... and yet they accept the order [they have choice in which deliveries to accept] and apparently don't try to find less exploitative work with better and more reliable pay while assuming housebound poverty-income people they deliver to are lazy and entitled -- ironic) then they enact revenge by damaging your items or taking some of them -- or more passive aggressively in my case by leaving items as far away from my door as is possible.
(I never should have politely asked in the delivery notes I am repeatedly required to refill, for them to please leave items right in front of the door -- or should have elaborated why -- some people will, despite my clearly stipulated selection for no-contact delivery [meaning leave the stuff and go away, I don't want to interact with you] call me over and over and over and over as I slowly make my way to the door, I think probably because they are expecting a cash tip...
And on occasion I have ended up explaining I have mobility issues and they suddenly become less huffy [thing is: if i go to the door with my crutches, many try to just push their way into my house -- likely trying to be helpful, to bring stuff in for me but NOT allowed nor wanted...and it's actually easier to just support myself on the doorframe or handle as I drag stuff in than to try to move boxes or bags with crutches attached to my arms [they are full cuff elbow crutches]....or to lean on the front step railing if they leave things as far away from the door as possible)...
The store will typically reimburse you for damaged or missing items but its a pain in the butt going through everything, taking photos and filing an online report or going through the 5+ minute long series of automated phone menus designed to divert you to the website reporting form (which btw can take hours to appear and often doesn't work), before you are allowed to be put on a long hold and eventually speak to a person (because you can't take a photo of something that ISN'T THERE, and good luck capturing in a single photo exactly how many of, say, the hundred pack of bandaids clearly opened and harvested from are missing)...

The sad fact is that people tend to be extremely presumptive and irrationally judgemental; And with grocery delivery, if you don't tip some delivery driver (and actually, I have often found -- even when you do -- presumably because a $5 tip doesn't meet their expectations, even if they only had to carry one non-cumbersome, light-weight bag or box from their car to your door... and yet they accept the order [they have choice in which deliveries to accept] and apparently don't try to find less exploitative work with better and more reliable pay while assuming housebound poverty-income people they deliver to are lazy and entitled -- ironic) then they enact revenge by damaging your items or taking some of them -- or more passive aggressively in my case by leaving items as far away from my door as is possible.
(I never should have politely asked in the delivery notes I am repeatedly required to refill, for them to please leave items right in front of the door -- or should have elaborated why -- some people will, despite my clearly stipulated selection for no-contact delivery [meaning leave the stuff and go away, I don't want to interact with you] call me over and over and over and over as I slowly make my way to the door, I think probably because they are expecting a cash tip...
And on occasion I have ended up explaining I have mobility issues and they suddenly become less huffy [thing is: if i go to the door with my crutches, many try to just push their way into my house -- likely trying to be helpful, to bring stuff in for me but NOT allowed nor wanted...and it's actually easier to just support myself on the doorframe or handle as I drag stuff in than to try to move boxes or bags with crutches attached to my arms [they are full cuff elbow crutches]....or to lean on the front step railing if they leave things as far away from the door as possible)...
The store will typically reimburse you for damaged or missing items but its a pain in the butt going through everything, taking photos and filing an online report or going through the 5+ minute long series of automated phone menus designed to divert you to the website reporting form (which btw can take hours to appear and often doesn't work), before you are allowed to be put on a long hold and eventually speak to a person (because you can't take a photo of something that ISN'T THERE, and good luck capturing in a single photo exactly how many of, say, the hundred pack of bandaids clearly opened and harvested from are missing)...

Once upon a time always tipped minimum ($3) for grocery delivery but now I am just done. I can't afford to tip, and it should NOT be my job to directly compensate underpaid workers for corporate greed and lack of regulation to reign it in. (and really it isn't my job -- the tipping culture is EVIL AND IRRATIONAL...and the ettiquette guides are as unimaginative as the delivery drivers who rant about the presumed-to-be selfish rich people ...some of whom may be way more poor than they are!...and it is rare anyone acknowledges that many people cannot afford it or the simple fact that by submitting to the expectation you allow drivers to take the path of least resistance and join the corporate bullies in exploiting the most vulnerable)
If all who could not afford to tip started saying to the corporations (in words or just refusal to tip) "PAY YOUR DRIVERS BETTER -- THIS IS NOT MY JOB AND YOU HAVE BEEN PROFITEERING SINCE COVID BEGAN" and to the irate, unimaginative, ignorant drivers "I agree, you don't get paid enough, I feel for you BUT I AM NOT YOUR BOSS -- GO TALK TO YOUR BOSS, ORGANIZE A UNION WITH YOUR FELLOW DELIVERY DRIVERS -- I AM NOT THE CAUSE OF CORPORATE GREED AND IN FACT BY TIPPING YOU I ENABLE IF NOT ARGUABLY ENCOURAGE IT AND BY YOU ROBBING ME OR ENACTING REVENGE YOU BECOME A PERPETRATOR OF IT NOT JUST A VICTIM " perhaps this insanity would start to correct itself, slowly, over years.
My position now: It is NOT my job to supplement the wages of people better off than I am -- so with rare exceptions (blizzard AND city hasnt shovelled steps AND driver has to carry something quite heavy) to heck with it.
(Again, I don't purchase any other service but grocery delivery where tipping would be expected or an option - except the odd non-optional taxi to see a doctor on urgent short notice and I do sometimes tip them when they are exceptionally helpful and kind, even though I likely don't tip as much as most people because the taxi itself leaves me in a deficit and I often literally spend my last dollars for the month on the taxi -- I have no truly "disposable" income at all, in the sense that all non-basic-needs items come out of basic needs I already cannot actually afford or are gifts from others. And if the driver is obviously taking the longest route and/or driving as slowly as possible (the cops could arguably pull them over as a hazard), or is overtly rude to me I tip them nothing -- exact change, please.

Very old fashioned Dad joke here, also used when people ask for a hot tip at the races.
We made changes to the award for delivery drivers recently. Companies had been treating them as contractors instead of casual staff which meant the companies didn't have to contribute anything to the worker's superannuation fund. That practice has now been outlawed.

On the table now is legislation to prevent delivery companies from hiding costs in the food prices, something most Aussies find highly offensive. As an example - the little shop around the corner from me charges $12 for a hamburger with the lot, if I order through DoorDash that same hamburger costs $17 plus they want a $5 delivery fee.
I actually haven't been back to that little shop for a few years now. They installed a new eftpos system and when I paid for my meal it hit me with a surcharge. The surcharge was only 18 cents but that's besides the point, hidden charges are offensive to us. Those sorts of surcharges are supposed to be illegal here now.
