Do you get weird advertising?

My S.O. and I watch stuff on Youtube. I've noticed a odd trend in the advertising I get.

Along with and endless stream of Medicare plan information, I also get advertising for a variety of products...

...but each product seems to have four selling points:

1. The product is "military grade"
2. It is "tactical"
3. It is so powerful that the government doesn't want me to have it
4. I have to "order now before they ban it".

The products have been: a flashlight, a spotting scope, a hoodie, sunglasses, and a small hikers stove.

Is it just me, or are other people getting adds for dangerously powerful sunglasses?

I like playing with Youtube's AI to see what it throws at me.

I'm never logged in to anything when I browse - no google, facebook or anything.
My browser automatically deletes all cookies every time I close it.

Because of this every time I go to youtube I'm a brand new unknown customer. Youtube has no access to my previous browsing history and can only judge me by my current search topics. So I'll deliberately pick on one topic and only click on videos for that one specific topic.

It's amazing how much irrelevant crap it throws at me, and almost always the sort of click bait crap that no intelligent being wants to watch. It takes a bit of work to find genuine content.

You must be a guy, or live in an area that is more rural.

These ads are targeted to a certain demographic. For example, right now I'm staying a few days in a very rural area of my state. The television ads are mostly targeted to an obviously elderly demographic. There are also a lot of ads targeted towards people with drug and alcohol addiction, which I would expect in rural areas. When I'm at home, in a higher cost of living area of the state, the ads are more targeted towards upwardly mobile people (very expensive cars and vacations, for example).

The specific selling points you mentioned are targeted towards Prepper types of guys. Selling points 3 and 4 are meant to create a sense of urgency in the potential buyer. It's basic marketing.

Yup - I am rural.

I was wondering what kind of list I got on - I guess it's just location.

It's very geared toward preppers.

Here, where I live, there are "family compounds" - right wing communes based around military ideas (as opposed to hippie communes based around free love).

No adds for the chronic alcohol, opiates, and meth users, though.

Yup, it's mostly location.

It would make no sense to advertise something like vegetarian meat-free products to a community that is, say, located in rural Montana, is mostly male and over 55 years of age. You target those vegetarian ads towards younger people in high cost of living communities.

LOL - that also explains the Medicare Part B plans that are constantly being pushed. We have a lot of retired folk here.

Hmm. Almost makes me want to pay attention to the ads now. I so thoroughly disregard/tune them out that I literally can't think of what ads I get.

Years ago, I bought one of those teak shower stools for the big walk-in shower and a small container of tung oil to keep it looking good. Thereafter, I was inundated with ads for yachts, massive wooden house decks and wood fences, and teak and tung oil in 100-gallon drums.

I mostly notice the ones after I've purchased anything online because here come ads for everything even remotely similar.
Yeah - if I look at fall bulbs for sale, all the ads I see on the internet start being about fall bulbs.

Like these ads? :)

Are you a Christian or Conservative?

I ask because I am a Christian, Conservative, Modest, and into herbal medicine and foraging. Waldorf style natural parenting and and homeschooling is a very important part of who I am.

Every day, I get lots and lots of recommended ads and videos for conspiracy theories, military grade this and thats, angry politics on either side of the aisle, etc.

But really all I want is to be happy and to spread happiness, and to love and be loved, and to worship Jesus.

Somehow to many people if you're into natural living, a Christian, and Conservative, they think you are paranoid and angry.

I mean, yes, it is a very very good thing to lay things by, and to know how to survive in an emergency. But don't let that consume you, in fear.

Basically, advertisers and search engines erroneously think I am like this:

Nope.

I'm not Christian, not conservative, and not even modest. I do forage and, although I don't use them, I do make herbal and mushroom medicine (I don't use them because I'm almost never sick -except garlic for colds, honey for sore throat, and catnip for sleep).

Funniest thing is that I get those ads in front of a Stephen Colbert or John Oliver segment while watching YouTube - absolutely the WRONG audience for survivalist stuff.

People live in all kinds of different ways, and most of them are just different, but OK, just not for me.

I will never understand the attraction of Alex Jones though.

The frogs are gay! Chemtrails! LOL!

Aren't these targeted ads generated by cookies from the places we visit on the internet?
Not sure. I watch YouTube on the tv, but without logging in to an account.

On the other hand, the identifying codes might be linked to my access terminal data.

I don't watch survivalist stuff though, or anything that would lead an algorithm to imagine I'm a survivalist.

Somebody to paying to place ads in dumb places.
