Dipping my Toes Into the Pool

The other day, I went to a walk-in clinic to ask for a referral to a psychiatrist for assessment, but was told that it's not covered by public healthcare here in BC, and just the assessment costs upwards of $5000.

In Alberta (and in Ontario at Surrey Place in Toronto, and other locations in other parts of the province) there is an Adult Diagnostic Assessment Clinic in Edmonton at the Glenrose Hospital, and private assessments can be arranged through Income Support...so if you ever feel like moving, for now, you could get help in other provinces. (I say "for now" because government change and cut services)

Something you might want to look into is whether BC Works/Disability Related Supports, through government "back to work" programs, might pay for you to have a private assessment - the key thing here is you would need to have a legit possible-ASD-related difficulty in finding or maintaining employment for this to be considered, if they do this in BC at all. (This is how I was finally diagnosed in AB, a few years before the Adult Autism Diagnosis clinic existed ....despite being such an apparently obvious case that my childhood is full of recorded assumption of unknown/not-yet-determined developmental disability -- even the VPD [city police, for non-Vancouverites] in Vancouver had it on record!)

Another option is to call SFU's or UBC's Psychology Programs and ask them
if they might offer free or low-cost assessment. They probably offer counselling but may or may not offer assessment services.

Some private psychologists also will offer sliding scale fees including for assessments -- it is a lot of cold-calling random doctors but you might find one sympathetic to your situation who is willing to help you, or could refer you to a colleague.

In theory (not so much in practice) psychiatrists may be qualified to diagnose
autism, and children's hospital clinics sometimes help refer their patients to adult providors during transition care planning -- meaning they might know of adult psychiatrists who work with those with ASD and/or developmental differences/disabilities generally, and be able to give you contact info for some of them -- if you call any such adult providors they may be able to advise you on whether they could assess you and have the process covered by MSP, or refer you to colleagues. So you could maybe try calling Developmental Pediatrics or Autism clinics at BCCH and asking if they know of any adult psychiatrists knowledgeable about autism that they could refer you to.
