Once we’re all settled, Adram decides to start the conversation with, “Today’s my half birthday!”

Tucker grins. “Really? Well, then, happy half birthday. How old are you now?” he asks, as though it’s his real birthday.

“Twelve and a half.”

“In that case, you get half a birthday present.” After looking around, Tucker grabs a paper clip from the table behind us, bends it until it breaks, and slides one half across the table.

“What am I supposed to do with half a paper clip?” Adram demands, holding it up in front of him.

Tucker shrugs. “Fractions of birthdays are about as pointless.”
