Has anyone here ever raced in real competition? My first dragstrip experience was at the former Keystone Raceway park in Pennsylvania running an 18.3 in the quarter mile in street class... seemed very slow so the mods began...my 1966 Caprice dragster will run in NHRA SuperStreet 10.90 class when I finish her...I know...that is a heavy car to compete in a class dominated by Camaros and Mustangs...4100 lbs was a lot...she now weighs in @3400 lbs..."don't look for 100 places to lose a pound,look for 1600 places to lose an ounce" I even threw out the headliner...
Nope. The one time I did a lap at the Brickyard there weren't any other vehicles on the track.

Cool. Sure beats a tour bus....but that's as good as it got for me that day. Back before they expanded the track to what it is today. I think that was 1965.
Maybe this summer I'll do the Bob Bondurant drive when Barrett-Jackson comes back to town. It was a huge success here last year. But that's quite a wait in line for a ride in one of those Bondurant Vettes. Fun though to watch them navigate around the cones at high speed.
The only existing picture of me racing my Caprice at Keystone in the 90s...14.30s @ 90 mph...my ex was on camera duty and totally blew all exposures that day...327+.030 built like a Camaro motor that was wrong for a heavy car...I trashed a nice driver to make it fast...then I decided to make a racecar my streetmachine and broke out the cleavers and began cutting...

I used a 288/290 adv duration .510 lift Crane cam,Rhodes lifters and 441 heads with 194 valves on triple angle seats mildly ported. The rotating assy was a large journal forged crank sitting in 4 bolt mains with pink connecting rods. the 441 heads are from a 327/350 horse unit and are the same castings as the DZ 302 heads without the accessory mounting holes. We built a turbo 350 without any wave washers in the clutch packs that were stuffed with racing clutchplates,rebushed the governer bore and select fitted the steels to leave the tolerances on the tight side. The front pump is heavy duty as well as the improved clutch drum and sprag assy. The torque converter is a B&M 3800 stall slippy one pumped into a 12 bolt with 4.10 ratio. The valvebody in the trans is full manual and there is no longer a vacuum modulater. It hits very hard when it shifts. That was in a 4100 lb. chassis...I have enough 427 stuff now to make the 900 horses I will need to run SuperStreet...my intention is to put enough car together to inspect it and drive it on the street at time or two...the 12 point rollcage is like monkeybars and now requires entering the car thru the window...at the last scale day we had chopped her fat butt down to 3400 lbs. allowing for some leeway in added parts...all this just to take on the 5-slows and win the bet of clearing a beer can with the front tires at launch. I was able to set the powertrain back 2.5 inches and moved the rear axle forward 3 inches on adjustable links...Wilwood 4 piston calipers running on late model Camaro rear rotors are up front with 2004 GrandAm rear disc assys on my 12 bolt that should slow it down...the old 4 wheel drum assys required both hands on the wheel and usually the second return road exit to shut it down...the car is a solid 85% complete and now mostly tied up due to time constraints and not wanting to buy the SFI time out parts until it is time to race...I have been rebuilding her since 1988 and this last session was done after I realized that I hated showcars and would never restore to original...I have all New Old Stock trim for her except a grille...you would be surprised to see how much stuff got thrown away to lighten her up...we got 75 lbs. off it just cutting the ends off bolts flush with their nuts and I will still cut some of the bracing out of the body...the trunk lid and hood have been butchered to just enough to pin them on and I will use the 150 lbs of bumpers to make moulds to lay up carbon fiber replacements...

Some exciting car bits!
Not sure if anyone remember a while ago my car was making a weird rattling noise & I thought the (automatic) clutch was failing? This is the miscellaneous BMW exhaust bracket part to blame - old one on left and shiny new one on the right. It literally disintegrated 18 years later and was rattling around making a horrible noise. Didn't really help either that BMW have something like 30+ different kinds of exhaust bracket for the 3 series.
Excuse the plastic bags, but my nan would have probably murdered me if I put car parts on the counter tops..

Sheesh, of all the things!!!! That's a whole lot cheaper than a clutch job, though I'm sure a BMW exhaust bracket isn't cheap.
Funny how it's often the most bizarre little problems! I got the exact bit via Ebay for around £10 inc P&P thanks to a very patient and helpful seller.
Ebay and Gumtree seem to be goldmines for car bits, got an entire like-new wheel for £20 total, and new sun visor for £7 total. Although a Renault, for example, would be significantly cheaper to source parts for!
Anderson Racing campaigned the HumBug at the dragstrips,with a VW boxer 4 cylinder that eventually made it into the 9 second quarter mile arena.
The HumBug did this with a 9,000 RPM launch and was an inspiration to VW builders,myself included.
I went on later to build my VW grenade project using a rejected HumBug camshaft from Anderson's discount bin.
My engine had a lifespan of only six hours before it shredded it's flywheel from it's double doweled crankshaft.
I will only say it was the most fun six hours I ever had in a beetle.
