Autism and inanimate objects?

I'm attached to one of my pillows I've had more years than I can remember. Pillow covers and cases have come and gone, but it's still the same pillow I hug like a child would a stuffed bear.

I've had this cushion for about fifteen years. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it as I love the vibrant colours. It was a part of my past when I didn't have friends to see or family to connect with. The only difference now is I have a select few friends and I'm making the most of it while they last... I'm hoping to have lasting friendships with them all.

I'm very attached to my stuffed animals/plushies and certain toys....In addition to being autistic I also have bad social anxiety (which I wouldn't mind betting is the result of years upon years of coercive therapy/"social skills" training and emotional abuse) which makes it difficult for me to even be in proximity with people I don't know or trust that well without feeling uneasy. This makes my plushies perfect stand-in friends b/c they're always nice and they're always there for me. I also don't need to scramble around for the "right words" to tell them exactly what I think or how I feel; they always just *know.* They don't mind if I cry, get angry, have a meltdown, dissociate or screw something up. They're also very soft and fuzzy, which is great for stimming and acquiring the tactile sensory input I need.

I also like kids, so it's kinda like my favorite plushies/toys are my kids. I don't really know how to explain it; it just makes me feel less lonely. I live with family members yet still feel all alone a lot of the time, so friendly plushies are just nice to have around.

I get very attached to my stuffed animals. The ones that don't come with names I name and I go through phases where I'll carry one around with me or sleep with it. Right now I have a Totoro plushie that I walk around the house with.
