What I always found interesting about China :

It was United by a written language but not a spoken language.
Ie the pictograms were the same but the people who used them spoke different languages.

The Japanese use the same pictograms (Kanji).

How about Chinese poetry that just uses the same word, but highlights how Chinese uses differences in tone.

There is NO "Us versus them", there shouldn't be anyway IMHO.
