Rova of Antananarivo, a palace complex in Antananarivo, Madagascar. It was home to kings and their families from around 1690 until the abolition of the monarchy in 1896. A 1995 fire devastated the complex, but much restoration has since been done.

Victor Emmanuel II National Monument, on Capitoline Hill in Rome, Italy. Also known as the Vittoriano, it honors the first king of a unified Italy. It is 266 feet (81 meters) tall. Housed within are a few museums, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and the Altar of the Fatherland - a shrine dedicated to the goddess Roma.

Belfast City Hall, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Construction began in 1898 - ten years after Belfast attained city status. It was completed in 1906. Fifteen years later, the building served for a brief time as the first home of Northern Ireland's Parliament.

It was just over two months ago that it occurred to me that my posts here focused heavily on my home country. I decided then to only do places outside the US for a while, and I did that for the next 26. Here's where I'm letting the streak end.

Duke University Hospital, Durham, North Carolina. Within five years of its 1930 opening, the medical school was ranked in the top twenty nationwide. The current campus is in use since 1980.

The ancient ampitheatre in Grand, Vosges, France. It was in this town, now with a population of under 400, that the Holy Roman Emperor Charles the Fat was crowned as king of Gaul in 885.
