A-Z Places

Blasket Islands, Ireland

This is the Blasket group of islands off the west coast of the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. The last island to hold a significant population, Great Blasket Island, was abandoned in 1954 under official pressure after a young man died when medical assistance was not available during bad weather. The self-sufficient population had persevered for generations, with their only connection with the mainland via hand-rowed boats, over a distance of 8 miles. I encourage anyone interested to read Tomás O’Crohan’s “The Islander” (“An tOileánach”).

Dotonbori, Osaka, Japan

Just one more photo to show it is usually packed with people at night.

Many of the images I have are videos - the dynamic billboards are amazing - but I can’t post those here.

Ganga, India

View across the Ganga (Ganges) shortly after sunrise. We were out on the water off the shore at Varanasi.

Hell Gate Bridge, New York City. Constructed in 1917, the bridge carries passengers with Amtrak and freight. Its main span is 1,017 feet but, if we include the approaches, it's 17,000 feet long! The word "Hell" in the name of the strait that it crosses means "bright" or "clear" in the Dutch from which it originated.

Isleton, CA. A very small California delta town on the Sacramento River. It had about 3500 people in 1930, now it's down to about 850.

Jade market, Yangon, Myanmar

This happens in Bogyoke Aung San Market in downtown Yangon. Very informal, only once a week (?), but hundreds of dollars-worth of jade changing hands.

Town House building at the Penrhyn Road campus of Kingston University, Kingston upon Thames, London, UK. It is the product of a 1975 merger between Kingston Technical Institute (founded 1899) and Gypsy Hill College (founded 1917). Seventeen thousand students study in four campuses. Town House, opened in 2020, won the Stirling Prize for Britain's best new building.
